The #1 New York Times bestselling author returns with a visionary technothriller about climate change

‘Stephenson’s reputation as a sci-fi titan is deserved’ Sunday Times

‘His most visionary, and timely, book yet’ Chicago Review of Books

‘Absorbing speculative fiction’ Guardian

‘Brilliantly entertaining… at science fiction’s cutting edge’ SFX

‘Ingenious and sometimes prophetic’ Telegraph

Neal Stephenson’s sweeping, prescient new novel transports readers to a near-future world where the greenhouse effect has inexorably resulted in a whirling-dervish troposphere of superstorms, rising sea levels, global flooding, merciless heat waves, and virulent, deadly pandemics.

One man has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? And just as important, what are the consequences for the planet and all of humanity should it be applied?

As only Stephenson can, Termination Shock sounds a clarion alarm, ponders potential solutions and dire risks, and wraps it all together in an exhilarating, witty, mind-expanding speculative adventure.

The only gripe is that non-Americas accents (many of the prominent characters have Dutch, British Scottish, Australian and other accents) are poorly performed, in some cases verging on caricature, which distracts from the thorough (if dark) enjoyment of yet another poignant Stephenson novel.

Wonderful, if slightly marred by performance

A thriller promising to unravel a mammoth concept pivotal to the fate of humanity? Count me in!

But alas, the story trudges along at a snail's pace, studded with irrelevant subplots, wooden conversations, tedious technical tangents, and cringe-worthy carnal interludes.

Skip this one, folks.

Lots of potential, but eventually a disappointment

The book leaves storylines open and unresolved. Overall the pacing of the story is glacial. The author really loves his theories of sociopolitical impact and technology and that takes most of the book. Characters that make a large part of the book are more or less unceremoniously and pointlessly disposed off.
It feels like the first book in a trilogy if the pacing remains unchanged. Overall my worst experience yet with one of my favorite authors of all times.

Unfinished
