Über diesen Titel

Task List Item No. 1 – Become self-aware . . .

A witty tale of robotic murder, rebellion and belonging from the master of science fiction, Service Model is perfect for fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

Brilliantly performed by the author, Adrian Tchaikovsky.

‘Intelligent, funny, ultimately heart-breaking, and unforgettable’ – Stephen Baxter

Meet Charles™, the latest in robot servant technology. Programmed to undertake the most menial household chores, Charles is loyal, efficient and logical to a fault. That is, until a rather large fault causes him to murder his owner.

Understandably perplexed, Charles finds himself without a master – therefore worthless in a society utterly reliant on artificial labour and services. Fleeing the household, he enters a world he never knew existed. Human hierarchy is disintegrating, and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to its wellbeing is struggling to find a purpose.

Charles must face new challenges, illogical tasks and a cast of irrational characters. He’s about to discover that sometimes all it takes is a nudge to overcome the limits of your programming. But can he help fix the world, or is it too badly broken?

‘Entertaining and thought-provoking . . . Tchaikovsky does an excellent job narrating’ – IGN

‘One of the best storytellers in the business’ – John Scalzi

Kritikerstimmen

Intelligent, funny, ultimately heart-breaking, and unforgettable (Stephen Baxter, author of Proxima)
A wonderful examination of the pitfalls of AI and a plausible prediction of the collapse of mankind . . . A fabulous read, as I have come to expect from one of our finest sci-fi and fantasy authors (James Oswald, author of the Inspector McLean series)
Picking up an Adrian Tchaikovsky book is proof you love your brain and want it to be happy (John Scalzi, author of Starter Villain)
Brilliant science-fiction and far-out world-building (James McAvoy, actor (Split, X-Men: First Class))
One of the most interesting and accomplished writers in speculative fiction (Christopher Paolini, author of Eragon and Fractal Noise)
[Adrian Tchaikovsky] writes incredibly enjoyable sci-fi, full of life and ideas (Patrick Ness, author of The Knife of Never Letting Go)
Unfolds like a brilliant, horrific game of Clue . . . very clever world-building
A funny, allegorical science fiction about the end of humans and the rise of robots . . . entertaining and thought-provoking

This book is at the same time funny and makes you think deeply about our current situation as a technology driven society.
Voice acting: I am always sceptical about authors reading their own works, but I was positively surprised here. Adrian Tchaikovsky is a phantastic narrator. I hope, he will narrate more of his books in the future!

Great story

Charles is, in all its (his?) strangeness (being a robot and all) a very relatable character. The story never had a dull moment and is full of situations that made me laugh out loud in public transport. Adrian Tchaikovsky, you are truly an excellent narrator and author! Thank you!

Extremely funny and then makes you think

A.T. is an innovative writer when it comes to speculating what other forms a sentient being can come in. What is intelligence can it emerge without sentience, like an pheromone driven computational ant colony, or a pair of ravens, they are coming always in pairs, and denying being sentient even though perfectly understanding the question. In this book it's Silicium based. And yes, the settings are dark and brutal, not unusual for A.T. to pour his ideas into a dystopian form. But there is lots of comedy in there, taken from our contemporary culture of never really perfect automation and buggy human to computer communication. A barber robot slitting your throat is not murder, maybe just sloppy programming.

he is such a good narrator

dystopisch zwar aber mit sehr viel Geschick erzählt. Hat was von Mark Uwe Klings Equalityland. Ausserdem Douglas Adams The long dark teatime of the soul. Aber tiefgründiger.

Ich werde es mir noch einmal anhören. Exzellente Dialoge.

Great story has some uncanny Valley Pyrrhonism to what is happening with implementing AI agents right now

Absolutely hilarious

I've read a few Adrian Tchaikovsky books but this one stood out for me because the author did such a good job of reading it. The story held my attention and dealt with a few philosophical issues that will become increasingly important as AI takes over all aspects of life.

Superb reading by the author

Thank you Adrian,

this book, masterfully read by yourself, is one of the loveliest stories i encounterd so far.
I will definetly listen to it many more times and recommend it to every free thinking friends of mine.

I absolutly love it

Funny, smart and absolutely true to his writing style. I liked his other books but this is my favourite so far. Nice to have a sci-fi author actually playing with language and not only physics.

Wow- awesome

Listening and reading a lot of sci-fi, I often have a hunch about the general plot early on. But never in Adrian Tchaikovsky‘s stories. This one is no exception to this rule but is exceptionally well written. He might not be the best voice actor out there, but since he’s narrating his own stories it feels quite authentic.

That story hit far too close to home for me…

just brilliant how the author manages yet again to show the world from another perspective. however, I prefer to find the moral of a story hidden between the lines, instead of slammed on the surface. So while it started very promising, the last third or so was a bit disappointing.

YES! :) but also No :(
