What waits in the shadows as we fight our greatest foe?

Eyes of the Void is the second high-octane instalment in Adrian Tchaikovsky's Final Architecture space opera trilogy. From the author of the thrilling science-fiction epic Children of Time, which won the prestigious Arthur C. Clarke Award.

The series is read by Sophie Aldred (
Doctor Who)

After one great battle, the Architects disappeared. Yet humanity’s fragile peace is brief. For, forty years later, the galaxy’s greatest alien enemy has returned. This time, the artefacts that preserved entire worlds from destruction are ineffective. And no planet is safe.

The Human Colony worlds are in turmoil as they face extinction. Some believe alliances with other species can save them. Others insist humanity must fight alone. But no one has the firepower or technology to ensure victory, as the Architects loom ever closer.

Idris spent decades running from the last war’s horrors. Yet as an Intermediary, altered to navigate deep space, he’s one of humanity’s only weapons. He’s therefore forced back into action. With a handful of allies, Idris must find something – anything – to stop the Architects’ pitiless advance. But to do so, he must return to the nightmare of unspace, where his mind was broken and remade. What he discovers there will change everything.

‘One of the most interesting and accomplished writers in speculative fiction’ – Christopher Paolini, author of Fractal Noise

I liked it. I had to concentrate more than on the other books. I admit I do listen while biking.
One would need to have listened to the first book in the series. It might not be one of the best books of the author, but still in the top overall for SciFi.

Very god SciFi

While enjoyable, the main plot diverges too much and is not advanced enough over the course of the book. Reminds me of the works of George R. R. Martin a bit, except for less casualties.

The main plot about the Architects does not advance a lot beyond what was known before. Unfortunate.

Also, the repeated theme of "Idris gets abducted/taken/forced somewhere he doesn't want to be" gets a bit shale after so many iterations.

Too many subplota

The book is definitely on the "softer" side of science fiction, hand-waving aside most of the science in favour of a compelling story, with some elements of cosmic horror thrown in the mix. Overall a very enjoyable character-driven story, with some interesting, if mostly "magic", concepts.

Sophie Aldred is a phenomenal voice actress. She manages to consistently deliver a stellar performance, curating subtle inflections in the character's lines while at the same time succeeding in giving each character a unique voice. All without ever sounding exaggerated or forced. Definitely one of the best performances I've heard so far.

Good book, phenomenal delivery

This might be for you, if you like endless descriptions of aliens battling and killing each other. Apart from that, the story is quite thin.

Too much action, too little plot

I suffered through the first part of the series and tried to listen through the second to get closure on the story. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it though.

There's precious little science in this 'science fiction' instead copious amounts of space magic are employed to glue together a plot comprised mainly of plotholes. It's even more annoying this book manages to even get basic high school physics wrong.

The protagonists are shallow and one dimensional, the main character lacking any agency whatsoever. Motivations and actions of the cast are ranging from inconsistent ludicrous.
Tchaikovsky is able write compellingly and tell coherent stories, check out his other books. If find it hard to believe he even wrote this.

Infuriatingly bad

An ongoing squabble about a bunch of people having some not that interesting and not necessarily understandable intanglements with other people whilst fearing some Alien Invasion

Yawn
