I love listening to Indira Varma. She is perfect for all the Witches' stories. I just wish that there would be more footnotes so there would be more from Bill Nighy (damn, he missed out on the '23 Oscars!)

Equal Rites war mein Einstieg in die Witches-Saga von Terry Pratchett, und ich bin komplett verzaubert (Wortspiel beabsichtigt).
Ich habe zwischen E-Book und Hörbuch gewechselt, je nachdem, ob ich gerade gemütlich auf dem Sofa lag oder durch die Stadt spaziert bin – und ganz ehrlich: Ich konnte kaum aufhören. Die Geschichte hat mich sofort gepackt. Eskarina, die kleine Heldin mit großem Willen, ist einfach wunderbar. Und Granny Weatherwax? Eine Mischung aus strenger Oma, Naturgewalt und heimlicher Superheldin. Ich liebe sie.
Die Story ist nicht nur spannend und witzig, sondern auch richtig ermutigend. Pratchett nimmt sich hier das Thema Geschlechterrollen in der Magie vor – und das mit so viel Charme, dass man beim Lesen (oder Hören) gleichzeitig lachen und nachdenken muss. Die Sprecher des Hörbuchs waren übrigens auch top – jede Figur hatte ihre eigene Stimme, und ich hatte das Gefühl, mittendrin in der Scheibenwelt zu sein.
Fazit: Ich bin begeistert, inspiriert und bereit für das nächste Hexenabenteuer. Wer kluge, schräge Geschichten mit Herz und Humor mag, sollte sich dieses Buch schnappen. Oder besser: gleich die ganze Witches Saga.

Ich bin offiziell verliebt – in ein Buch, eine Hexe und ein ziemlich eigensinniges Mädchen mit einem Zauberstab.

The first time that you'll meet Granny Weatherwax... :)

Magic is alive and thriving on the Discworld; and the 8th son of an 8th son will become a wizard. Wizards also do know, when they will die, which gives them time to look for a successor or bless an newborn infant with their staff.

But what happens, when something went wrong? When the newborn babe isn't a boy, but a girl? There are no female wizards, sure, there are witches, but do not compare them to wizards, especially not when Granny Weatherwax can hear you...^^

Eskarina will not only learn the basics from Granny Weatherwax, before accompanying her to a journey that'll changes everything...not only for the wizards at the Unseen University, but also for young Eskaterina...

I did enjoy this story quite a lot; Granny Weatherwax always belongs to my favourite characters of the Discworld, and it's a lot of fun to encounter a different arch-chancelor, before Mustrum Ridcully took over...

It's amazing this came out in 1987, written by a British white man. Terry Pratchett was an absolute GEM. He had such incredible insight and empathy, he comes across as a writer full of kindness and care as well as humour. He was able to write a 9 year old girl facing off with a centuries old misogynistic institution with an old witch as her ally, without condescension or falling into lazy cartoonish "strong female character" tropes, and make both characters deeply believable and relatable, and give them both agency in a richly observed world of gendered oppression that *feels* so very real and human, yet set in a fantasy world carried by elephants on the back of a space turtle... AND he made the whole thing riotously funny.

Plus the performance of the reader of this audiobook version is STELLAR. Excellent!

I won't be getting into Mr Pratchett's writing since I guess we can all agree the man was a total genius! Instead I would like to thank Indira Varma for an outstanding performance! So glad there's more where this one came from! PS: Finished the whole Witches Series and what a fantastic journey it was! Can def recommend ALL of them! Ms Varma is a star!
