Best Book of 2020 by New York Times, NPR, and New York Post
"This hushed suspense tale about thwarted dreams of escape may be her best one yet.... Its own kind of masterpiece." (Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post)
"A new Tana French is always cause for celebration.... Read it once for the plot; read it again for the beauty and subtlety of French's writing." (Sarah Lyall, The New York Times)
Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After 25 years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.
"One of the greatest crime novelists writing today" (Vox) weaves a masterful, atmospheric tale of suspense, asking how to tell right from wrong in a world where neither is simple, and what we stake on that decision.
Kritikerstimmen
“A slow-burn stunner that will keep readers turning the pages late into the night. Recommend to the author’s legions of fans, as well as those who enjoy crime fiction set in small towns like Julia Keller’s or Jane Harper’s novels.” (Library Journal, starred review)
“In another stand-alone, French again displays impressive versatility...French skillfully builds suspense...a fine thriller, but also a moving story of an unlikely friendship that grows from refinishing a ramshackle desk to rebuilding two nearly broken lives.” (Booklist)
“Deliver[s] plenty of twists, shocking revelations, and truly chilling moments.” (Kirkus)

Tolles Buch, wunderbare Geschichte
Endlich einmal wieder eine echte Geschichte anstatt das Abarbeiten von Erfolgsvorlagen. Originell, und berührend mit fein gezeichneten, detaillierten Charakteren gepaart mit einem ausgezeichneten Leser.

Excellent ingredients in a thin soup lacking spice
Yes, she can narrate, yes, she can develop characters, but in the end you wonder if the narrating and character developing wasn't a bit overdone and more effort should have been invested in the story itself. It was a well told but in the end boring narrative with a finale lacking everything making the whole thing worth reading. Probably great for fans, but I won't become one.

Tara French keeps you proofing your own heart and tolerances ...
as usually Tana French tells not only a twisted crime story but also and very much about feelings and behaviours of very different kinds of persons. In her unique and sensible way she keeps us, the readers, wondering in search of our own judgmental way of living ... as a listener I had to get used of the Americans irish accents, but in the end liked to recognize each figure by voice immediately ... very much.

Good voice, boring story
I usually love Tana French and this book is very atmospheric and a good character study. However, the story did not catch me, it dragged on and there was not enough to it. The voice of the reader is gtrad though, I really enjoyed listening to him.

Slow story
The story takes a while to develop. Great character study and Irish country life well described

I know that voice...
It took a second and for the protagonist to talk to a character he's not sure he likes for me to realize I was listening to Arthur Morgan's voice. The nuance in Roger Clark's performance is exactly what this story needs.

Great Narrator, Disappointing Story
I wouldn’t say this book is bad but it’s not memorable either. Tara French captures “small, town community” really well and you could really feel the atmosphere that she is building, but there just wasn’t a feeling of satisfaction. The ending was fitting, but the journey to get there was just “meh.”
I really liked the narrator though. He was able to capture Cal really well and delivered a solid Irish accent.

Thank you!
After hearing this book I am speechless. The intensity of the story and the art of storytelling turn it into a work of art.

Great Story. Great Voice.
Just could´nt stop listening! Even if the story was´nt so alive and thrilling (which it is!) I would have relished it from the first word to the very last. The voice and rhythm of Roger Clark suites it so well ... I guess that guy could read the telephone book to me and I would enjoy it.
But of course it was much better than that - Tana French made me see and hear and smell everything that happened and led me to a beautyful and unexpected and yet very plausible end.
Thanks to both of them.
