Über diesen Titel

The Noonday Demon is Andrew Solomon’s National Book Award-winning, bestselling, and transformative masterpiece on depression—“the book for a generation, elegantly written, meticulously researched, empathetic, and enlightening” (Time)—now with a chapter covering recently introduced and novel treatments, suicide prevention and anti-depressants including SSRIs, pregnancy and postpartum depression, and much more.

The Noonday Demon examines depression in personal, cultural, and scientific terms. Drawing on his own struggles with the illness and interviews with fellow sufferers, psychiatrists and scientists, policy makers and politicians, drug designers, and philosophers, Andrew Solomon reveals the subtle complexities and sheer agony of the disease as well as the reasons for hope and recovery.

He confronts the challenge of defining the illness and describes the vast range of available medications and treatments—including antidepressants, psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, electroconvulsive therapy, and more—and the impact the malady has on various demographic populations around the world and throughout history. He also explores the thorny patch of moral and ethical questions posed by biological explanations for mental illness. With uncommon humanity, candor, wit and erudition, award-winning author Solomon takes readers on a journey of incomparable range and resonance into the most pervasive of family secrets. His contribution to our understanding not only of mental illness but also of the human condition is truly stunning.

This book is a must-read for every person who suffers from depression or has loved ones that suffer from it. The invisible illness, that touches everything in the world of the affected, gets explained from A to Z with very deep analysis. Do not miss the end of the book, there is a very important message in it.

An Atlas indeed

After watching Andrew Solomon's TEDtalk I was excited to find his books on audible.
He is by far my most favorite writer and I am happy that he published this book about a topic that is so dear to my heart. Thank you for this great experience.

Fantastic

i enjoyed the stories a lot, but the way the sentences were written could have been done better. Every sentence had the word depression in it more or less and I disliked the fact that the author focused mainly on medication as a cure for depression and did not included many success stories. The book made me somehow sad. after every sunset there should be a sunrise

book with potential.

The author decided to read the book himself. That was not a good decision, his voice is not pleasant or clear and as he is emotionally invested, so every sentenced comes across nagging and annoying.

Furthermore, the content of this book has no structure. It is by no means an atlas. While there are chapter with ominous titles ("Populations", "History", "Hope"), every chapter is the same: person X was raped as a teenager, after years of abuse she became suicidal, she felt "I just want the pain to end", later she received that drug and this drug, now she is slightly better. Like others mentioned, this book is also written very poorly. The word 'depression' is part of 90% of the sentences and there is a complete lack of any progress or common thread across the book. Just story after story of how people experience depression and what drugs they receive.

Not sure I learnt anything from the 8 hours I spend listening to Andrew's annoying voice. Please listen to a sample before you buy!

Very unstructured and poorly narrated
