An enthralling read about a world of politics, scheming and alliances. The characters are interesting and the book underlines the importance and value of kindness and empathy.

Smart, wholesome and superbly told

This slice of life is nothing for people who enjoy plot driven books. We are meandering through a new emperors life and witness his struggle in reconciling being a good emperor with being a good man.
Which he is, his kindness, compassion and wit were a joy to behold.
The audiobook can be a bit difficult because of the many names. Kyle McCarley did a fantastic job in narrating though, so if said person was present and spoke I would immediately recognise their voice.
Sometimes I would struggle with understanding the political details, but Maia gently guided me along with his thoughts and emotions.
I can't wait to listen to it again. But probably alongside a copy of the book in my hand.

Its a very straight forward story. A kind goblin becomes emperor and now he has to deal with stuff. Its all very competently written and there is not really much to critize.

Though it should be made clear what kind of book this is, bevor anyone starts listening. This is not a story about magic, romance or court intrique. I mean some of that stuff appears in the book but its never the focus. Its really just a story about a guy that has a good moral system and who talks with people. I personaly would have liked some more romance or fantasy aspects, but that is just a personal opinion.

So in conclusion: The story is alright.

Ich höre das Audiobuch zum dritten Mal und genieße Majas Gesellschaft erneut wirklich ganz ungemein.

This is by far one of the best stories I have heard or read lately. It was recommended to me by a friend and when I asked him what he liked about the story he just stated that actually not much is happening but that the main character is very lovable. I strongly disagree that not much is happening as there is more than one fundamental change in the main character’s life but the story is told so smoothly that one can just miss that fact by simply being too occupied with feeling for the protagonist, trying to keep back the tears and the eagerness to hear more of his story.
As the use of very exotic names can be confusing and a lot of them occurred in the story the brilliant reading helped a lot to prevent confusion as I can sort voices better than names! The story is made for winter evenings with a good cup of tea to warm one’s hands and heart!

Very slow moving story about a kind emperor's life. With so many difficult names that i could not fully keep up.

Boring

This praised book is a long winded and rather emotionless telling of the new life of a goblin emperor.

Note: Minor spoilers might happen ahead.

I could not create a bond to the protagonist nor to any other character. The plot around the airship crash feels flat and forced just like everything else. In part it might be due to the narrator who has or chose a slightly too whiny or resentful voice for everything.
The court rules and setups are the center of it all and are quickly as boring as reading a long winded historical recollection.

So if you like such this book is for you. If not, you're going to be thoroughly bored like I was.
