NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “One of the year’s strongest fantasy novels” (NPR), an imaginative retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale from the bestselling author of Uprooted.NEBULA AND HUGO AWARD FINALIST • NAMED ONE OF PASTES BEST FANTASY BOOKS OF THE DECADE • ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Public Library

With the Nebula Award–winning Uprooted, Naomi Novik opened a brilliant new chapter in an already acclaimed career, delving into the magic of fairy tales to craft a love story that was both timeless and utterly of the now. Spinning Silver draws readers deeper into this glittering realm of fantasy, where the boundary between wonder and terror is thinner than a breath, and safety can be stolen as quickly as a kiss.

Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father’s inability to collect his debts has left his family on the edge of poverty—until Miryem takes matters into her own hands. Hardening her heart, the young woman sets out to claim what is owed and soon gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk—grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh—Miryem’s fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered. She will face an impossible challenge and, along with two unlikely allies, uncover a secret that threatens to consume the lands of humans and Staryk alike.

“Gorgeous, complex, and magical . . . This is the kind of book that one might wish to inhabit forever.”Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Cool and clever and . . . dire and wonderful.”—Laini Taylor, author of Strange the Dreamer

I enjoyed this book a lot. I love fairytale adaptations in general, and this is a very good one. Making the main character Jewish gives an opportunity for many interesting plot points, although it crosses the line into preachy a few times. I particularly enjoyed the first half of the book, where characters are problem solving and getting introduced to unfamiliar worlds. There are some YA elements to the story but they're a fairly small part.

The book has a lot of different first person narrators. One needs to pay a bit of attention to figure out when they switch and who it is at any given time, but their "voices" and situations are different enough that it's not difficult at all. The reader in this audiobook contributes to this by reading the different PoVs in different ways, it sounds natural and supports the storytelling.

The reader has a very pleasant and versatile voice and way of reading. My one complaint is that there are two monstrous characters who speak quite a lot late in the book, and for them the reader uses very exaggerated voice acting. That becomes grating in a few scenes. But it's a small complaint compared to the great overall quality.

Great story well read

As good as the book, sometimes better if this is possible. A journey in deep winter. Very Good!

A beautifully written retelling of rumpelstiltskin with a lot of Jewish influences, which you rarely see. I often thought “oh, now it will end in a certain way”, but the book kept surprising me in a wonderful whirlwind of turns and twists. Would definitely recommend!

The book I never knew I needed

the somewhat modern fairytale has 3 strong female characters. the story intertwines the fate of all three women. the story finishes without an Open ending and left me satisfied and happy.
i wish there where more stories like this one out there.

a great story! couldn't stop listening.

Very unique story .. very unique way of delivering it to the reader. It really made an impression. Nice interesting characters. I loved how the view point and the story telling changed when it came from one chracter view to another. Just beautifull. Better pacing than in Uprooted where I didn't like the pacing of the story as it was all over the place. Voice performeace quite well done.

exceptional story telling
