NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “One of the year’s strongest fantasy novels” (NPR), an imaginative retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale from the bestselling author of Uprooted.NEBULA AND HUGO AWARD FINALIST • NAMED ONE OF PASTES BEST FANTASY BOOKS OF THE DECADE • ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Public Library

With the Nebula Award–winning Uprooted, Naomi Novik opened a brilliant new chapter in an already acclaimed career, delving into the magic of fairy tales to craft a love story that was both timeless and utterly of the now. Spinning Silver draws readers deeper into this glittering realm of fantasy, where the boundary between wonder and terror is thinner than a breath, and safety can be stolen as quickly as a kiss.

Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father’s inability to collect his debts has left his family on the edge of poverty—until Miryem takes matters into her own hands. Hardening her heart, the young woman sets out to claim what is owed and soon gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk—grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh—Miryem’s fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered. She will face an impossible challenge and, along with two unlikely allies, uncover a secret that threatens to consume the lands of humans and Staryk alike.

the somewhat modern fairytale has 3 strong female characters. the story intertwines the fate of all three women. the story finishes without an Open ending and left me satisfied and happy.
i wish there where more stories like this one out there.

a great story! couldn't stop listening.

Very unique story .. very unique way of delivering it to the reader. It really made an impression. Nice interesting characters. I loved how the view point and the story telling changed when it came from one chracter view to another. Just beautifull. Better pacing than in Uprooted where I didn't like the pacing of the story as it was all over the place. Voice performeace quite well done.

exceptional story telling

classic fairytale with a modern touch. entertaining with some lengths in the second half but totally worth listening to.

fresh fairytale

The prose is evoking a dark winter and seems very realistic, still the fairy tale elements do not only not seem out of place, but rather fitting perfectly into this somber affair.
The different characters all have very distinct voices in their writing. However, not quite so with the voice of the voice actress, who made it hard for me to follow who is who at first, since she gives the three main girls all rather similar voices, with only some slight variation in their register (one of them has a little lower voice than the other two). The accent she manufactures is quite effective, though, and she ought to be lauded in that respect.
Novik weaves the stories adeptly into one another, but in parts the story meanders a little and the overall pacing could have used a little more action overall and cut out little bits in the middle.

Sinister fairy tale

First of all, I loved the narration! It was pretty much perfect for me. I also enjoyed the plot itself with its web of interconnected characters and the narrative structure was interesting without it being to much on the nose. The minor details I didn’t loved (but wasn’t irritated by it either) was the pacing, which felt a little bit uneven at times and the prose felt flat in a couple sections. I think that was done on purpose, to convey that one of the female main characters is from a “simpler” background but I wish the author would have found a different way to handle that, as it would have done this character more justice.
Overall this is a solid fantasy novel that manages to translate a children’s fairytale into a more complex story and is a perfect weekend listen.

Cozy but gripping fantasy novel
