    Inhaltsangabe

Ever since she was a tiny child, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who won't stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world.

Though her journey begins alone, she soon finds companions: Mogget, whose seemingly harmless feline form hides a powerful and perhaps malevolent spirit; and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories.

With threats on all sides and only each other to trust, the three must travel deep into the Old Kingdom, toward a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death, and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own hidden destiny.

A tale of dark secrets, deep love and dangerous magic, Sabriel introduces Garth Nix as an exceptional new talent.

    Kritikerstimmen

"It's an epic journey in a world as richly realized as Middle-earth and much darker and bloodier than Harry's trials at Hogwarts...Tim Curry brings authority to the reading, grounding the fantastic elements with nuance of character and depth of emotion." ( AudioFile)
"Rich, complex, involving, hard to put down, this first novel...is excellent high fantasy." ( Publishers Weekly)
    "A page-turner for sure." ( Booklist)

Good book - beware low audio quality

This is a very good book, and I think the narrator is excelent, but it is hard to tell, because even with the highest audio quality formats audible has available, it sounds like an original 8kbit recording or a 1930s tube-radio. So be ready for hissing, audio artifacts and an odd old-school radio vibe.

    Unique and Engaging Series

Garth Nix offers a really unique fantasy vision in this series, one that I had a hard time finishing, simply because I didn't want it to end. A bit grim at times and never afraid to explore the macabre, this fantasy borders on the horrific at times. Tim Curry does a lovely job of bringing the characters to life.
    all-in-all, a really enteratining listen!

Far too dark & Tim Curry disappointing

Unfortunately this audiobook didn’t work for me at all. Although I find the young female main character Sabriel intriguing and her relationship with her father interesting and represented in a convincing manner plus the world building fascinating (well, parts of it…), the whole story was far too dark for me. I love LOTR, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and last but not least A Wizard of Earthsea, but where I’m coming from I cannot approve if the dark (powers of evil, black magic…) is kind of an end in and of itself. Also, I would never have expected to dislike Tim Curry as a narrator. I mean, he’s a great actor, isn’t he? But even though he has a wonderful voice I found his narration over polished to the point of being dull, and I’m sorry to say his voice acting uninspired, shallow and even clichéd in parts. And I can’t understand why you would choose a male actor for a story with a young female main character?! I guess however, this is just me, considering most ratings are enthusiastic about his performance.

    Starts strong ends ok

Very atmospheric and engaging in the beginning. Good prose but bad audio quality. Overall very unique in the beginning with some horror & macabre. Later parts don't mesh well with the beginning with mind-boggling world building choices (starts out nondescript and then goes to 1950s era world with guns out of nowhere... Wtf?)

Be aware that this story has almost zero character exploration and development and has little connections to the books in the series. Some pacing issues near the end with a ending 'one the last page'. Creative and unique parts of the story lift it out of the gutter however.

    Great book! Get it!

This is a very entertaining story about Good vs. Evil, including necromncers, zombies, malicious dark spirits, a reluctant heroine & her friends, and a drop of romance. Tim Curry does a marvellous job bringing each character to life !
"Sabriel" is book 1 of the "Abhorsen-Triology" - be sure to get them in the correct order:

    1. SABRIEL 2.LIRIEL 3.ABHORSEN
