A really pleasant story with a unique plot. I really enjoined listening to this book. Don´t expect any fast paced action ;)

Roger Mulligan takes a job as butler in Shackleford house after three tours in Afghanistan and a stint as an EMT. His job is to look after Joseph Shackleford for his niece, until he can be placed in an assisted living facility. Mulligan doesn't know the first thing about being a butler, but does his best to learn as fast as possible. But some things just don't add up about Mr. Shackleford and his aquaintances.

As stories go, this one was more on the slow burn side for me. But I loved how the story unfolded and how Mulligan handled a lot of situations. A lot of ex-military guy stories follow the "one man army" trope that gets old very fast. Mulligan is more of an average guy who goes the extra mile to do a good job.

I was surprised by the grip the story had on me right from the start. I love the tension between the day to day minutia and the fantastic world right on the edge of vision. You just KNOW it's there, even if you couldn't prove it. The Sense of duty and the idea of service portrayed in the relationships touched me. I am a romantic and this story is so satisfying and relaxing. I'm sure I'll listen even for a third time because the Voice Talent (as in magical) lands the characters and conveys so much beyond the Page. Reading was a blast, hearing it was value added. Thank you and I hope for a sequel to this Story.

At first I was made cautious by some reviews saying that there is hardly any plot. I mean, come to think of it, it's true, there was very little plot-wise? But the worldbuilding, the characters, the way the reader/listener discovers together with Roger Mulligan a whole new career and a whole new world, it was so amazingly alive. The speaker was also perfect. It's a gem.

Der Sprecher ist Hervorragend.
Die Geschichte geht richtung "Slice of life" auch wenn es eine Hauptgeschichte gibt.
Eine einfache Geschichte und Handlungen sind spannend Erzählt. Keine Abschnitte habe ich als langweilig empfunden.
Ich bin positiv überrascht wie ein einfacher Butler so spannend sein kann.

Except the point that story description is a little bit misleading (not much happening with faeries and such), it was a surprisingly good book and one of the few i shortly after buying listened several times. The story is soothing, the characters are extremely well crafted, both from the author and narrator, and I am eager to learn how the story continues. Well done. The only reason for 4 Stars is that there are even better stories out there. Otherwise it would be a clear 5.

… da die Erzählung das Thema Magie nur am Rande berührt.
Im Mittelpunkt steht der Butler und seine Beziehung zu der Familie.

Ansonsten sehe ich die Geschichte als eine interessante Abwechslung von meiner typischen Lese- oder in diesem Fall Hörkost!

Der Spannungsbogen in dieser Erzählung ist eher ruhig, es gibt keine dramatischen Wendungen oder Höhepunkte, aber auch keine wirklichen Durststrecken. D.h. wenn einem die Hörprobe gefällt, dann gefällt einem wahrscheinlich auch das ganze Buch.

Ich musste das Buch gleich noch mal hören. Es ist eine ruhige Geschichte mit viel Wohlfühlfaktor. Sehr schön erzählt. Hoffentlich kommt der nächste Band bald!
