Never let your brother date a witch, lest they get turned into a talking cat.

Morgan Winters wants an ordinary life:

A job at a bookstore, an apartment she can barely afford, and a healthy amount of existential dread. Her brother (AKA "The Ruiner") ruins that when he shows up on her bedroom windowsill, transformed into a talking cat.

He claims it's due to a date gone horribly wrong, but Morgan's not buying it. Still, when he begs her to take him to a witch who can change him back into a human, she reluctantly agrees. Family is family.

When they arrive in Hollowbeck—a suspiciously small and suspiciously magical town—they find the witch.

Only she's dead.

And there's a letter left behind—with Morgan's name on it.

Even though no one knew she was coming.

Morgan could run. She could hide. But she's not the type. She's determined to stick her nose into the middle of the supernatural, figure out who left her the letter, find the murderer—and hopefully sort out Ruiner's cat problem before he leaves another hairball on the rug.

Witch Slap is the first book in The Hollowbeck Paranormal Cozy Mysteries series from Amelia Ash and bestselling author Kim M. Watt. Join Morgan and Ruiner as they explore a small town full of magic, mystery, and murder.

This was an entertaining and funny, light book, much less average than I had expected. The writing was good and sometimes clever, there were jokes and absurdities throughout, it was an actual thought-out mystery and I was grateful for the lack of a love story (although there are mild setups for future books). I also liked the refreshingly imperfect two main characters and their bickering sibling relationship. Also one of them is a cat. Called Ruiner. A source of frequent smiles for me.
This not an amazing novel that I will keep thinking about, but I'd definitely read more from the series if I was looking for easy entertainment.
Oh, and I very much enjoyed the narrator (and her accent). She had a really good feel for the right tone and even did some individual voices for characters.

Easy-breezy, fun entertainment

Delivers what it promises: a Medium paced, low stakes, cosy little mystery with witches, vampires and the obligatory sexy librarian.
The plot twist was not complete predictable, at least not from the very beginning and the characters are all well thought of and seem to have more depth than just to help the story progress.
A nice good night read

I enjoyed the setting in this book and the story is quite entertaining. I didn’t know who dunnit until the very end. The characters are quirky and I liked at least some of them. It’s a good first book in a series and I wouldn’t mind coming back to it at some point.
