Über diesen Titel
A lord in danger. A magician in turmoil. A snowball in hell.
Exiled to China for 20 years, Lucien Vaudrey never planned to return to England. But with the mysterious deaths of his father and brother, it seems the new Lord Crane has inherited an earldom. He's also inherited his family's enemies. He needs magical assistance, fast. He doesn't expect it to turn up angry.
Magician Stephen Day has good reason to hate Crane's family. Unfortunately, it's his job to deal with supernatural threats. Besides, the earl is unlike any aristocrat he's ever met, with the tattoos, the attitude...and the way Crane seems determined to get him into bed. That's definitely unusual.
Soon Stephen is falling hard for the worst possible man, at the worst possible time. But Crane's dangerous appeal isn't the only thing rendering Stephen powerless. Evil pervades the house, a web of plots is closing round Crane, and if Stephen can't find a way through it - they're both going to die.
Warning: Contains hot M/M sex between a deeply inappropriate earl and a very confused magician, dark plots in a magical version of Victorian England, family values (not the good kind), and a lot of swearing.
A Charm of Magpies, Book 1
©2013 K. J. Charles (P)2017 Audible, Inc.It surprised me though, that the book is very short, ca 4houes, then there's another short story and at least 30 min "preview" from the next book in the series.
The reader is quite good, though I'd prefer a bit more difference in the voices of the two protagonists, sometimes it's hard to distinguish between who says what.
The best KJ Charles

The characters: Lucien is quite likable but I couldn’t completely warm up to Stephen. Maybe because I didn’t really feel like I knew that much about the man, even by the end of the book. Instead I felt like I was missing a lot of backstory regarding his character and, honestly, this world as a whole. Lucien’s past seemed a little less elusive to me but there’s still a lot of information missing and even though yes, there’s more books, I felt like it just wasn’t enough for me to form some kind of attachment to the characters. *MINOR SPOILERS INCOMING*
When it comes to their relationship I also sadly gotta say that I wasn’t quite satisfied with the enemies to lovers arc, probably because the part with them behaving like actual enemies is almost non-existent. I’m not saying it doesn’t make sense for Stephen not to crucify Lucien for his father’s and brother’s crimes but it just didn’t really feel like enemies to lovers. *END OF SPOILER*
The world: As I already hinted before I felt like the introduction into this slightly different Victorian world was done a bit weirdly. I probably would’ve been able to understand everything a bit better from the start if there had just been a short but clear explanation of the magic of this universe somewhere near the beginning instead of trickling the information down over the course of the book. This way I had a somewhat hard time grasping the differences between this fantasy England and the real deal in regards to, well, the amount of fantasy that’s there. And fitting with that I still don’t really feel like I know what Stephen actually can and can’t do with his abilities either. *ANOTHER SPOILER*
What I absolutely can’t take seriously about his magic though is the idea that Lucien’s cum makes him stronger, no matter what explanation the author wants to give me for that. This part actually makes me cringe so hard it might very well end up the main reason I won’t continue the series. *END OF SPOILER*
Conclusion: As the title says, it’s okay. At least if you’re not expecting too much and can ignore a certain ridiculous “power boost” on Stephen’s end (explained in the spoiler right above). It didn’t give me the feeling that I immediately need to read the next book though or the feeling that I’d want to read it again. Maybe I’ll continue the series at another point in time out of pure curiosity or maybe I’ll just forget about it. But for now I kinda need a break.
It’s okay

Too short to be called a book. Klune is better.
