The level of detail and thoroughness makes this a book to read; yet I listened to it and learned a lot, and was thrilled many times underway, both by the intricacies of the many different cancers and their ‘beauty’ (as it referred to once, in awe) and by the massive strides that medical research are taking. As a cancer survivor myself, it’s not always ‘easy listening’ - and some in that situation my want to take some caution before diving in. But the book itself cannot be recommended enough … for … just about everyone, since we will all get in touch with it one way or another.

The depth of the research is baffling and reminds Rebecca Scloots story of Henrietta Lacks. How do you find time to write such a intriguing, nuanced and deep history of cancer research. As biology student I went on a beautiful journey through names and ideas that dominated the past and coined the present where I find myself learning some few abstract concepts. It is so important to teach ideas and not only memorising facts. And the vocabulary of Sid is just ridiculous. An absolute must, loved it until the last letter.

Siddharta Mukherjee hat eine grandiose Biographie über die Plage geschrieben, die uns noch ein Weilchen verfolgen wird. Die vielen Denkschulen in ihren Irrtümern, Glücksfällen. Die Entstehung von Lebensrettenden Medikamenten, die Kämpfe seiner Patienten, der Kampf von Jimmy und natürlich den Ärzten, die so oft hilflos zusehen müssen.
Eindringlich und spannend führt er uns durch die Geschichte der seit Jahrtausenden größten und gefinkeldten Geißel, die immer wieder in vielen Gesichtern zurückkehrt: Ja, carcinosa, Krebs...

Great book! I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in oncology and science. It is masterfully written and well read. Inspiring story about our war against cancer. I am amazed how many facts and real-life stories there is in this book.

Having witnessed a large part of the later events as a cancer scientist I enjoed the easily comprehensible narration of expert information and shared memories of younger history as well as more recent developments.
