Very inspirational story of medicine, aging and death. highly recommend reading for all physicians and other people with interest in healthcare or the healthcare industry.

I will admit that the beginning of this book was very difficult to get through. We don't like to think about our mortality because it's uncomfortable and inevitable. We prefer to ignore that hardships are to come and try to live in ignorant bliss for the moment. This book does a very good job of making you feel the agonies of getting old or ill. Gawande painstakingly points out how the body breaks down and the indignities that you face. I never thought too much about nursing homes, but the stories told here really show you the importance of having control over your own life and why staying at home and hospice care is so valuable. At some point we all become incapable of taking care of ourselves, it's in these cases that feeling in control becomes so important. Hospice can actually prolong your life in addition to making it better.
I also really enjoyed the history lesson of where nursing homes came from and how they arose from hospital overflow to save money, rather than a will to make life better for the old. The history really shifts the perspective of what nursing homes do and points out how institutionalized they are.
I feel more prepared for hard situations, for myself and loved ones, after reading this. Gawande points out the importance of having hard conversations (do you understand what is happening, what do you want most out of life, what is the most you are willing to give up to meet those desires). Having these conversations early spares making the wrong decision or second guessing. I've also learned how valuable hospice is and how it's not giving up, as well as the grave importance of maintaining control over your life as best you can. After reading this I do not plan on every putting a loved one in a typical nursing home.
