Über diesen Titel

This program includes an introduction read by the author.

No recent scientific enterprise has proved as alluring, terrifying, and filled with extravagant promise and frustrating setbacks as artificial intelligence. The award-winning author Melanie Mitchell, a leading computer scientist, now reveals its turbulent history and the recent surge of apparent successes, grand hopes, and emerging fears that surround AI.

In Artificial Intelligence, Mitchell turns to the most urgent questions concerning AI today: How intelligent - really - are the best AI programs? How do they work? What can they actually do, and when do they fail? How humanlike do we expect them to become, and how soon do we need to worry about them surpassing us? Along the way, she introduces the dominant methods of modern AI and machine learning, describing cutting-edge AI programs, their human inventors, and the historical lines of thought that led to recent achievements. She meets with fellow experts like Douglas Hofstadter, the cognitive scientist and Pulitzer Prize - winning author of the modern classic Gödel, Escher, Bach, who explains why he is “terrified” about the future of AI. She explores the profound disconnect between the hype and the actual achievements in AI, providing a clear sense of what the field has accomplished and how much farther it has to go.

Interweaving stories about the science and the people behind it, Artificial Intelligence brims with clear-sighted, captivating, and approachable accounts of the most interesting and provocative modern work in AI, flavored with Mitchell’s humor and personal observations. This frank, lively book will prove an indispensable guide to understanding today’s AI, its quest for “human-level” intelligence, and its impacts on all of our futures.

Melanie Mitchell vividly and honestly communicates the current state of AI. While clearly stating her opinions she never fails to present arguments from both sides. Additionally, she invites the reader to form his or her own opinion by imparting the necessary knowledge about current AI systems. As an AI researcher myself I can confirm that, unlike many other books, the portrayal of the current state of AI and its workings is factually correct. A must read for anyone who is genuinely interested in how AI currently works and where it might take us!

Exactly what we need in this current AI hype!

wonderful summary how we get here where we are now , detailed enough, with facts and examples from broad field

must read for anyone exploring AI field

Despite being a few years too old to cover the current hype about ChatGPT and LLMs, the audio book is a great resource re: AI foundations, limitations and challenges.

Great overview

This historical overview is excellent, but it misses the latest developments in the field of GenAI.

This is a comprehensive introduction to Artificial Intelligence.

Melanie Mitchell points out the fundamental problems in the AI field with regard to abstraction, analogy formation, common sense, domain-specific (non-conscious) intelligence, etc., which still need to be solved in the coming decades.

I also agree with the dictum that we should be less afraid of machine intelligence than of machine stupidity when the latter is applied on a large scale.

Be that as it may: a book worth listening to!

Excellent anti-AI hype presentation

Mostly old news if you are a data scientist. But very good introduction on what AI is capable of or not and what to expect for layman.
And maybe a few nice thoughts for professionals as well, but I found most things already known to me and have heard most ideas already elsewhere.

If you are a data scientist you might find most of the content old news
