The Black Swan is a stand-alone book in Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s landmark Incerto series, an investigation of opacity, luck, uncertainty, probability, human error, risk, and decision-making in a world we don’t understand. The other books in the series are Fooled by Randomness, Antifragile, Skin in the Game, and The Bed of Procrustes.
A black swan is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpredictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9/11. For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives.
Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don’t know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate opportunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the “impossible”.
For years, Taleb has studied how we fool ourselves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. A very insightful book
A famous book. It reminds me of the danger of relying too much on the mathematical model. And life is full of surprise because of black swan.

I'm glad I listened to this book, a unique read that allowed me to understand what I felt under the skin ... and I think we all know it and yet we still rely on financial experts who continue to deplete our finances. References to other authors or literature are also great. exceptional lektor

Interesting insights and concepts.
Very interesting listen. It gave me a completely new way to look at certain problems, especially in regards to forecasting and planning at work.

COVID-19
Reading or listening this work in the aftermath or actually during the unfolding of the pandemic is of particular interest. I share his views and found confirmation of mines (it’s not a small bias). Does he predicting the occurrence of a pandemic make COVID-19 not a black swan? It is by all means one

Komm mal auf dem Punkt!
Ich hatte mir dies angeschafft bei Audible auf die Empfehlung von ein Kollege. Das Buch ist lustig und unterhaltsam. Voll mit interessante Erzählungen und Verweisungen nach Philosophische Denker und Gedanken.
Seine These ist eigentlich sehr interessant, aber, hab mir doch verschiedene malen gedacht, na, Freund, komm mal auf dem Punkt.
Jeder der mit vorhersagen und Projektionen zu tun hat oder damit arbeitet und sich selbst erst nehmen will sollte dies buch lesen. Abgesehen von was der Autor vermittelt gibt es einen ein unterhaltsamen Einblick in Wissenschaft und Philosophie in das wahre Leben.

Thinking: fast and slow was better
It is really hard for me to review this book. I liked it, but at the same time hated it! The only thing I am certain of, is that the book Thinking fast and slow by Danny Kannehmann, one of the heroes of Nassim Taleb had a better narrative, was much more comprehensive, and covered much more context.
I especially was quite unsatisfied with the aggressive and offensive tone this book had against people who did not get his point. Even though I completely agreed with the author, and recommended his book to all my friends and family, a lot of times I found myself saying: "This guy is such an arrogant asshole"!
One other thing was that this book kept repeating the same message over and over and over again. I especially did not care for the author's inconsequential subjective worship-like comments on the lifestyle of his "Heroes". I don't know about other people, but I agree with a reasonable mild critique/praise a lot easier than an emotional assault/love letter.
Also the tone of the narrator was a little high pitched and fast-paced. This made listening to the book for long durations improbable, and especially in the beginning of the book, when I was not used to his tone, it sometimes made me angry.
All this was my comments on the experience I had from the beginning and the middle of the book. But by the end, when I was used to the emotional tone of the author and the fast narration, I stood up, clapping for a minute, giving the book the standing ovation it deserves.

Still worth reading in 2019
Even if this book is almost 10 years old I really enjoyed the philosophical and practical approach of Nassim Taleb. I am very convinced that his arguments are true and would lead to a better world if followed.
Sure he attacks several persons very directly which I cannot really judge as an non-American.

too long with unneeded details
the idea of the book is great but the book is too long and with too much unnecessary details. after 3-4 hours of hearing i got the idea, the rest 14 hours weren't really necessary

Leute schreiben einfach für Geld.
Und wie ist das bitte Bestseller? Stundenlang erzelt Man etwas was alle schon wissen - dass Economy kein genaues Wissenschaft ist, wenn Man überhaupt das Wissenschaft nenen kann.
