For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Popular blogger Cal Newport reveals the new key to achieving success and true meaning in professional life: the ability to master distraction. Many modern knowledge workers now spend most of their brain power battling distraction and interruption, whether because of the incessant pinging of devices, noisy open-plan offices or the difficulty of deciding what deserves their attention the most. When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

One of the best books ever.
I would recommend this book to practically everyone as it is still the best one on human relations over 90 years later. Dale lays everything out in an easily understandable and easy to follow manner. He also uses many every day examples to illustrate his points that can be related to. Do not hesitate to get this classic, you will not regret it!

more thoughtful than expected, perhaps outdated
Although I associated the book with manipulating people, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that, more often than not, Carnegie's advice is quite humane and empathetic: show appreciation for people, look for the higher values in their actions, be positive when giving criticism. A lot of the examples are indeed about convincing, either in a sales context or a family context, with some entertaining examples from high statesmen like US Presidents or prominent businessman. But it always stops short of pure and simple manipulation. It's also an entertaining read simply to observe how outdated a lot of the examples feel. I kept thinking, "sure, that might have worked in early 20th-century America", but I was constantly bumping up against the feeling that things really aren't that simple anymore. It would be really interesting to understand how concepts such as those documented by Carnegie have permeated society and business, and how they have be augmented and deformed by the passage into post-modernity, post-history, and post-capitalism...
