Über diesen Titel

In this sharp, funny and empowering guide, journalist Chris Kohler takes you through the rigged carnival of modern life, where the games are broken, the prizes are fake and somehow you're paying $28 to park near the entrance.

From loyalty schemes to late fees, gift cards to sneaky supermarkets, How They Get You pulls back the curtain on how the systems work and how to outsmart them. Written for anyone who has ever looked at their bank account and thought, I swear I didn't buy anything, this is the ultimate handbook to understanding how the game is played - and how you don't have to lose every single time.

You'll laugh, you'll groan and you'll probably cancel a few subscriptions. But most of all, you'll walk away with the clarity and confidence to make better choices about how to spend and save your hard-earned money.

If you love the YouTube videos like I do, you now got to enjoy this with much more background and tips around each topic. Thank you for writing and narrating it, Chris! Makes it all the more credible and enjoyable to me when the author speaks himself. Gotta go now, want to listen to it again.

Relevant outside Australia and around the world

And it’s a real review, not paid by anyone. I really listen to whole book, I am not a bot :)

It was interesting

Hey mate, first of all thank you for writing the book.

I love your YT-Shorts. I also appreciate that you read the book yourself. That made an important difference to me signaling that you put love in that book rather than just making money. I hope you don't mind the honesty. It's just that influences sometimes have mercy intentions.

That being said I can see you gave it all you got and I appreciate that.

However, this is a good, solid book with financial advice FOR AUSTRALIANS.

I understand that financial advice is always somehow local. Tho with your Social Media base you have a global audience (I imagine at least). I for once come from Germany. Hence a lot of the content of your book was irrelevant for me.

Yes, some of the content of your book is general. But I have to say there was nothing new in there for me (like really. I thought about it). The only new things were Australia-based and those didn't apply to me.

It was in a way reassuring that I already know all the international dark financial magic of the corporate world (according to your book) tho this made it also a bummer.

Tho I genuinely enjoyed listening to your voice for a few hours. I also understand the marketing team won't appreciate it but maybe you should point out the fact that this is a book for Australians mostly.

Just a thought.

Tho in all honesty I hope this book is going to sell well. We need more people like you to fight against all that bad stuff going on. Thanks for helping with that.

Cheers.

Good for Australians

he got me - I got fooled. Chris Kohler has some funny YouTube Shorts. They suggests he understands business strategies and tactics. Unfortunately, this book is a shallow oneside look on various business behaviors. I hoped until the end, something worth my attention would be discussed. How I stayed tuned till the end, I dont know. I have to admit, the intention to bring people to pay attention to how they spend their money is honorable. However the brush used is too broad from normal business strategy to criminal activities. Business is more complex as Chris wants us to believe and more important a deal is not product/service for money. In todays world it is a lot more nuanced why for example we choose a subscription or pay money in-game. Yes, Chris you are right, it is tricky to not spend for add-ons you do not need, however business normally dont start with the sole purpose to get you. If so, they would not exist anymore. Any business needs a reason to exist that is seen by the public as a just cause.

He got me - how disappointing
