Avi Loeb seems to be one oft the few established figures in academia, who places scientific inquiry way above all fashions and strategic, career related considerations. Whether you share his final verdict or not, the book is really worth every minute. His reasoning is precise, his general remarks about the state of today's scientific landscape are really worth considering and his personal anecdotes entertaining. Despite the rather narrow topic of the book and its speculative nature I find it to be among some of the best I've come across.

The book is giving a good summary of events of the discovery of the object that swept through the solar system and inspires the reader with the hypothesis that it might have extraterrestrial origin. It always stays on the ground of scientific evidence and gives an exciting outlook of more discoveries to come

The book covers a broad range of topics, not just extraterrestrial life, but science in general, the life of the author and popular media. Its very entertaining and never gets boring, while still delivering a high level of sophistication, so not oversimplifying things.

What I especially enjoyed was the criticism towards contemporary theoretical physics, where great sums and time are invested in theoretical, unprovable mind-castles, instead of more provable fields like extraterrestrial life.

1I/2017 U1, das erste bekannte interstellare Objekt, das unser Sonnensystem besucht hat, wurde am 19. Oktober 2017 vom Pan-STARRS1-Teleskop in Hawaii entdeckt. Weltweit bekannt wurde es 2019 unter dem Namen Oumuamua. Kurzzeitig als Asteroid klassifiziert, gehen Wissenschaftler heute davon aus, dass sich das Objekt eher wie ein Komet verhält.
Der renommierte Astrophysiker Avi Loeb hält dagegen, dass Oumuamua ein Beweis für extraterrestrische Intelligenz sei. Er nimmt den Leser mit auf eine Reise in seine Gedankenwelt und baut seine Hypothese Kapitel für Kapitel auf. Angereichert mit Anekdoten aus seinem Leben, lernt man aus der Lektüre auch den Menschen Avi Loeb kennen - die israelische Heimat, seine Mutter, die ihn früh intellektuell prägte, den Beginn seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn in Princeton und schließlich seinen Ruf nach Harvard, wo er bis heute lehrt.
Man muss nicht an Außerirdische "glauben", um Gefallen an diesem von Robert Petkoff brillant gelesenem Hörbuch zu finden. Vielmehr liefert Avi Loeb hier ein leidenschaftliches Plädoyer für den allgemeinen Erkenntniswert von Wissenschaft für die gesamte menschliche Gesellschaft. Kühn, und gleichzeitig pragmatisch, fordert er nichts Geringeres, als einen Paradigmenwechsel in der theoretischen Astrophysik und Astronomie.
