How can a colony on Mars survive when the greatest danger on the planet is humanity itself?

All contact is lost with the first privately funded colony on Mars during a long and destructive sandstorm. Satellite imagery of the aftermath shows extensive damage to the facility. The 54 colonists who called it home are presumed dead.

Sometime later, a new mission sets down on the planet surface to investigate what remains of the derelict site, and crew biologist Dr. Jann Malbec soon discovers that the facility had developed into to a full-blown human DNA editing experiment - with unsuspecting colonists as the guinea pigs.

However, now that the truth of what was going on in the colony is revealed, powerful Earth-based corporations begin to fight for control of this extraordinary genetic research. But Dr. Malbec begins to realize that returning this technology to Earth could doom humanity to a worldwide pandemic of apocalyptic proportions. She must do everything she can to prevent that from happening - even if it means that she might never see her home planet again.

Since english is not my mother language (I am german), I am surely not capable to give a fully reliable judgement upon the art of writing in this piece. However, I was pretty much thrilled from the start until the very end of this terrific triology. Kilby manages to mantain quite a speed throughout the entire plot without suspending logic in both the scientific/technological aspects of the story as in the structure of the narrative. The plot, as typical for science-fiction, touches topics of antropolgy and philosophy, but unlike many such works, it avoids to get all spiritual or esoteric- the speed of events unfolding prevents the story from developing in some redundant redemption of amateur philosophy, like it unhappily happens to many promising pieces of science-fiction when they last longer than 25 chapters. Also, Kilby, although he wastes no time to get the action and suspense start over and over again, does not need coincedences to get from one part of the story to another; he really knows how to story-tell. Thumbs up!
