Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut Children of Blood and Bone.

They killed my mother. They took our magic. They tried to bury us. Now we rise.

Zélie remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. When different clans ruled - Burners igniting flames, Tiders beckoning waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoning forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Only a few people remain with the power to use magic, and they must remain hidden.

Zélie is one such person. Now she has a chance to bring back magic to her people and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must learn to harness her powers and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where strange creatures prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to come to terms with the strength of her magic - and her growing feelings for an enemy.

The movie of Children of Blood and Bone is in development at Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions with the incredible Karen Rosenfelt and Wyck Godfrey (Twilight, Maze Runner, The Fault in Our Stars) producing it.

The mispronunciation of Yoruba is grating

There are so many Yoruba people in the world, could you not have found one to read this book instead of letting this woman mangle the English pronunciation and the distort every Yoruba world into a travesty of itself?
Or at least have gotten her a speech coach who speaks Yoruba or has been to Nigeria and knows how to pronounce e.g. Planten? Really what is wrong with the world where a story about Yoruba people, places, gods etc. is read by someone who doesn't have any idea what they sound like.
This is just disappointing and distracts from the story so much that I am ready to stop listening and go back to reading it myself.
If you are Yoruba, DO NOT buy this audio book, you will be sorry

brilliant

This is an absolutely fantastic book. And the audiobook production is just brilliant, one of the best I've ever listened to. Big recommendation, I can't wait for the sequel to be released!

Wow

So breathtaking! The story is so great and I wait for the next!! I really liked the speach, from the authorin at the end, finally some one who links the fantasy to the real world. I mean that is always so, but she says it out loud. Big thumbs up.

difficult for non nativ englishspeakers

honestly, I did not get far with this story, I heard good things about it, which is why i gave the story a good rating, even though I did not understand a lot. The voice actress, speaks a west african, or maybe west indian dialect and while it sounds wonderful and fits very well with the subject matter my english just isn't good enough. its really a shame as i appreciate it when not all books are read by the vocal equivalent of a posh southern english lord...
