When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, it's up to six college students and their experimental physics project to prevent the end of civilization.
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away.
Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet. The team has just hours to get as many people as possible across to Outland before a lethal cloud of ash overwhelms them.
Nothing has prepared the refugees for what they find - a world of few resources and unprecedented dangers. Somehow, they must learn to survive, because Outland may not just be a safe haven - it could be their new home.

Back to the Roots
Dennis E. Taylor reverts back to his beloved theme of Gates into Universes (See "The Fold") and plays his usual style of protagonists and witty conversations.
I truly like his writing and so far have heard every book several times.
This one is easy going, nice to read BUT I question the story to come in the sequels.
Besides his typical knack on the scientific side this story does have the focus on the classical social problems of people, who are in danger and under extreme stress.
This is a bit like "The Walking Dead"
After 5 episodes the zombies are no thread anymore but stuff in the background and the relations of and between the different protagonists and the typical social problems.
"Do not tell everyone the truly important parts, keep the misunderstanding at a maximum and hence wrong decision based on prejudice"
Well.. a nice story but not his best.
Ray Porter, man, Ray Porter is always the entertaining reader, very professional.
But also HE reaches his bounds.
So people in this story sound like the people in "The Fold".
A 50ish black Professor becomes a 30 year old doctorate.
This is confusing for someone like me who has an excellent memory on sounds and stories and people
Finaly:
Nice stroy but not his best.
Fun to hear but the sequels might not be so much fun.
We will see, I am eager to read the next sequel, just to find myself wrong :)

Absolute amazing book
I love this book, great speaker and really cool humor and jokes make it all feel like I'm part of it. I mean literally, it could be my brain living it. I couldn't stop listening to it. I can't wait for the next book, please hurry up Mr. Taylor :-)

Fun story, great narration
Not as fun as the Bobiverse series, but great fun overall, a very interesting premise, and Ray Porter's narration is top notch as usual.

Good read.
If you know Denis E Taylor's work narrated by Ray Porter, then you will not be disappointed... whatsoever. One or two times in the book, the characters' actions or motivations or at least the reason for being in a certain place, is poorly explained or just downright doesn't make sense.
For that, though, the book is pretty good and well worth a listen.
Porter obviously shines once more. He might very well be my favorite narrator, good man.

One of the best books I ever read
Honestly, no person can tell me Dennis E. Taylor isn't a talented Science Fiction Author. Scientifically researched, tense, just the right amount of romance and social interaction, believable world and characters, it's incredible what he managed to bring to paper. I can only recommend this book if you like Sci Fi. Can't wait for Book two.

My new favorite author!
Once again, a nicely paced. Easy to follow. Nice and witty dialogues. Attractive even for NotSciFifans. Tension building all the way to the end. I could not stop to read. Character building while telling a captive story.

A bit character heavy for my taste
