Über diesen Titel

Matt is reincarnated as a Tree.

Not just any tree, but an overpowered one in a fantasy world that serves as the battlefield for an ongoing conflict between demons and the heroes summoned to oppose them.

But Matt can be a great tool against the evil forces. TreeTree (as Matt comes to be known) will learn all sorts of skills, gain levels, and in doing so, build up a forest, train young subordinates, protect a village, and more.

Don't miss the start of an epic reincarnation/Isekai LitRPG story about a man who becomes a tree, growing and progressing throughout the ages in an eternal conflict against a demon incursion.

The narrating character retains his memory after death and is now managing a tree in a cliche fantasy world, After having huge bursts of luck and superior passive abilities, he interacts with his surroundings more and more.

Pro:
The story has surprising elements and novelty.
That the main character is essentially unthreatened makes for a relaxed listening experience.
The growth of the character offers a bit of a power fantasy.

Con:
The sentences are sometimes quite dry.
Most of the many characters are simple and barely recognizable. Or recognizable by exaggerated simple traits.
There is one occasion where the author suggests that the main character does not see something coming that is painfully obvious to the listener.
References to games that only some readers might know, feeling lazy and cringe.
A lot of hand waving with magic and the divine, which is unsatisfactory world building.
The main character seems to have huge plot armor, hand-tailored abilities to his situation and absurd levels of comfort which makes the world much less believable, almost like a list of choices or ideas barely cloaked as a story.
The chapter labeling scheme becomes a boring hindrance after a while.

Personal result:
I enjoyed most of it and was entertained and thankful.

Parts of the competition of lit-RPG and dungeon-core stories are worse, so my low expectations helped.

gamified management of an overpowered tree

Let me prefix my review by stating that my problem with the reader is highly subjective. Other listeners might actually enjoy what I am critiquing, seeing it as a unique experience.

I have listened to nearing 200 audio-books on Audible, many of those multiple times, and only come across this specific issue in one other series. The reader of this book, Mr Peter Berkrot, leans heavily into his personal style of intonation, where he over-emphasizes some parts of a sentence, and under-emphasizes the other parts. This in itself would not be a problem, if he would not change his volume of speech significantly between these parts. This combined with the tendency to 'act out' the content of this book, instead of simply reading it aloud and let the content of the sentence do the work of telling the story, leads to a somewhat unpleasant listening-experience. As it stands, he quite often starts a sentence with a low, slow grumble, goes on to loudly exclaiming the next bit, only to reverting again to the low grumble. This results in actual differences in volume, which have not been adjusted post recording. With those volume/intonation-changes happening up to multiple times per sentence, and with the highly emphasized moments feeling to be twice as loud as the low, grumbly parts, I caught myself having to toggle between two volume-settings on my phone constantly. Quite unfortunately, since this stands in the way of what might be a quite enjoyable story and book-series, once it eventually gets off the ground.

This was my second attempt of listening to this story, but I only made it 5'ish hours into the book, and stopped then, as I don't see myself enjoying a whole series of this experience. I might give this series a third go sometime in the future, we'll see.

Like I said in the beginning, this is highly subjective. I encourage everyone to form their own opinions, but I wanted to give a fair warning.

Unpleasant audio-mixing

I liked the idea of a Tree as a main protagonist. Unfortunately the implementation in a Litrpg didn’t work out too well here.
The beginning of the book is very slow going but after a while the story begins to pick up a bit. The characters a quite flat and not very well developed. The main character is inconsistent and illogical throughout the book. Most annoying for me personally is that literally every problem is solved in a heartbeat. Consistent through out the story when the tree thinks of something the system gives him a solution and the main character keeps floating through the story. The very few exceptions are when he isn’t really trying hard enough or thinking of different solutions.
I also disliked that the author uses the minions and system as an excuse and isn’t really putting in the work or the time for explaining.

I am confused about the positive ratings of the book but maybe it’s because many listeners enjoy „slice of life“ stories. That’s what I’d conclude this book is. Easygoing characters without real struggle or initiative and drive getting handed everything by the system.
Very few new ideas besides the main character is a tree and the little bit new isn’t well thought out or followed through with.
