Ashlock wakes in the courtyard of a demonic sect... as a tree. A tree that eats people.

An odd start to a new life. Almost as strange as the humans flying through the skies on flaming swords and challenging the heavens. After all, this is a world where humans could chase the goal of immortality through the art of cultivation.

But Ashlock is merely a sapling in a desolate courtyard, left alone with his thoughts and unable to speak to those passing him by.

Unless he does something about it...

Every day, he grows stronger as he cultivates and uses a suspicious daily sign-in system that grants him powerful skills, mutations, summons, and items, all in exchange for credits earned from eating flesh and watching the seasons pass by.

But his peaceful life and man-eating ways can only go unnoticed for so long. His Qi-rich bark makes him a target for many young masters. If that isn't bad enough, tensions in the demonic sect are at an all-time high with the Beast Tide festers on the horizon.

Ashlock's only option is to grow faster and stronger than any tree has ever done in the history of the nine realms—all while trying to avoid being turned into firewood.

Die Story und Progression des hauptcharakters sind unglaublich fesselnd. Von Anfang bis Ende wird schön mit Spannung gespielt & Charaktere werden wunderbar eingeführt und etabliert.

The story is about a recently born demonic tree named Ashlock, with a unique mind and a system to assist him in his growth.
Ashlock suddenly wakes in world of cultivators and has to do his best in order to survive, grow taller and protect those few important to him.
All in all the story is very interesting, the unique aspects of his tree-life are well described and the occasional differences in morals and viewpoints between a tree and men is intriguing.
The worldbuilding seems good too, we only get a few bits of knowledge about the world each time, since the protagonist doesn't know about the human-world (because he's a tree and can't move or talk...) and most of his contacts in the beginning are kinda naive or outcasts themselves. We do get a lot of information in the later part of the book tho, which makes me eager for the next book.

The narrator is great, his way of narrating adds a lot of flavor to the story and it's easy to listen to. I am really surprised how much I liked it, especially since I bought this book on a whim (I am familiar with the wuxia/xanxia novels tho), and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes cultivation novels.

I did give it only 4 stars for the story, because in the last ~5h the book felt a little slow to me. A lot of things seemed to be described in too much detail, especially if something big happens the action doesn't seem fast-paced because it has "too much" flavour. This might be a bit nitpicking, but I felt like there were too many thoughts and not enough actions. In addition one of the female characters kinda changed, I liked her in the beginning but later I didn't understand why she started telling random lies to random people. The tree/mc didn't care too much, thus it isn't really bad, but it seems weird for a cultivator to deliberately lie to mortals. For example, she could have said nothing instead. Maybe I can understand it a little but it seemed strange and I didn't like that part of her character developement. For now I am split between "I like her" and "she's annoying". For these 2 reasons its -1 star for me.

Anfangs war ich zweifelhaft mit der Pämisse als Baum wiederbelebt zu werden. Aber dieses Buch hat es so gut vereint und es geschafft eine Geschichte über einen Baum, der sich nicht mal bewegen kann, so verdammt spannend zu machen das auch ich mich nicht bewegen konnte und einfach nur weiter hören wollte.

Ich lese und höre die Serie jetzt schon bis zum 4ten Buch und es gefällt mir sehr. Das erste Buch ist sehr spannend, es ist lang (20 Stunden) und in der Zeit gibt es auch viel Fortschritt und nicht nur Idle Banter.

i liked the pacing, the characters are ok and the worldbuilding is good but vague. if you are curious about the concept of a tree cultivating give it a try

Due to the story itself the world building has a nice and steady pace. As far as the eye can see ;)

I bought this because I thought the concept was absurd, but I do love martial arts cultivation stories and thought to myself "hey, why not?"

And I am amazed about how much I liked this book. Ramón De Ocampo is a great voice actor, every character had a great and distinct voice. The story was unusual but amazing and the power curve for the main character is refreshingly good.

The story is very nice. In some places its written like a mystery but then the answer is presented imitate. That is a neat way to keep me focused.

I liked the story and the World that was build here my only complain is that the author sometimes overdraws the the bow when holding us in suspens but it is good enough to say let's try the second book

I bought this audio book by accident, since I mistook it for another book. But I don't regret a thing. This story is amazing, and I count it now to my favorites. Even though I am not so well versed in cultivation stories one gets slowly introduced to it with the protagonist also learning more about it, so it's even very informative.

I only can recommend it, it's a mega great surprise.
