Brilliant!

This is such a great story. It took me a few chapters to get into it, but then it got SO good. new information towards solving the murder pops up in every chapter, but it still leaves you guessing all the way to the end. Many twists and duplicitous characters as well as the time loop trope make for great suspense.

The performance is also excellent.

It took my breath away

This is a mystery inside a mystery inside a mystery. Set in an Agata Christie-esque setting, the main character is tasked by a mysterious entity to solve a murder which does not appear to be a murder - indeed, it is a murder by suicide, only it is even more complicated than that. At the same time, it is a time-travel story: the hero travels in time and sees the same events in different "hosts". And it is a thriller - as there are a few killers intent upon murdering the main character in all his hosts. It is also a story about redemption...
The writer is a master plotter and the story is a masterpiece of ingenious plotting. All the hosts have very palpably different personalities, indeed, the main character is many different men at the same time. The language is exquisite, colourful, almost poetic.
The best thing about the book is how tension is rising throughout the book. You simply can't stop listening...
The somewhat questionable aspect is how over the top it all is. There is about 10 murders or so happening in one remote location, committed by several murderers... it is as if the 1920s gangs of Chicago had a conference which went terribly wrong. Yes, it is explained, yet I still wonder whether it could have been made less convoluted.

Great Audiobook!

From beginning to end it was captivating!
The speaker gave every character its own voice and the authors style of writing is very detailed and immersive.
In the end it was far too short. I wish there would be more books like this. It truly was a unique experience.

Good but confusing

Really interesting story with really well written characters, but a lot of them. Maybe it would be a little easier to follow as a normal read. I really enjoyed Jot Davies reading, he is amazing. The plot kept me interested even though I was completely oblivious to what was happening xD
I really recommend this book!

Unputdownable

I've read scores of books from all kinds of genre. This is a gem - unique plot, remarkably fine drawn characters - and oh my, there are so many - and a choice of words that made me shake my head in awe. Excellent reader as well. Can't wait to read Stuart Turton's next book.

Überraschend

Wirklich unterhaltsam und spannend erzählt. Am Anfang war es doch etwas verwirrend und lang. Aber wenn man dran bleibt, wird es wirklich interessant. Ich tat mich bei Weilen schwer damit, die unterschiedlichen Figuren auseinander zu halten. Aber am Ende fügt sich alles zu einem Bild zusammen. Spannend bis zum Schluss.
Rentiert sich definitiv es zu Ende zu hören. :)

Langatmig und kompliziert

Die Idee hörte sich für mich sehr gut an. Leider fand ich das Buch sehr kompliziert und wenig fesselnd. Pluspunkte gibt es für den tollen Sprecher.

Where to start?

Now this was wild! :D
I absolutely hated Davies' voice in the sample - especially the breathing. But I really really needed a new crime/mystery audiobook and so I bought it anyway. I couln't stand the first 5 minutes as those were exactly the minutes from the sample. But then Davies stopped breathing so awkwardly and I realised that he reads so enthusiastically because he really wants to bring all these characters to life. I got used to his voice and reading style after about 15 minutes.
And the story! Now, the story is quite complex and confusing but so absolutely thrilling! It is so much more than the usual whodunit! I really liked the whodunit-part, not so much the idea behind it all, but that didn't bother me too much. There are just too many names and backstories to remember them all, so I had a list to keep track.
In the end, i totally loved this audiobook for about 93% of the time. ;)
