It is 20 years since the events of La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One unfolded and saw the baby Lyra Belacqua begin her life-changing journey.
It is almost 10 years since listeners left Lyra and the love of her young life, Will Parry, on a park bench in Oxford's Botanic Gardens at the end of the ground-breaking, best0selling His Dark Materials sequence.
Now, in The Secret Commonwealth, we meet Lyra Silvertongue. And she is no longer a child....
The second volume of Philip Pullman's The Book of Dust sees Lyra, now 20 years old, and her daemon Pantalaimon, forced to navigate their relationship in a way they could never have imagined and drawn into the complex and dangerous factions of a world that they had no idea existed. Pulled along on his own journey too is Malcolm; once a boy with a boat and a mission to save a baby from the flood, now a man with a strong sense of duty and a desire to do what is right.
Theirs is a world at once familiar and extraordinary and they must travel far beyond the edges of Oxford, across Europe and into Asia, in search for what is lost - a city haunted by daemons, a secret at the heart of a desert and the mystery of the elusive Dust.
The Secret Commonwealth is truly a book for our times; a powerful adventure and a thought-provoking look at what it is to understand yourself, to grow up and make sense of the world around you. This is storytelling at its very best from one of our greatest writers.

“Michael Sheen throws himself wholeheartedly into narrating this sequel to La Belle Sauvage and listeners will be rapt. For the ever-expanding international cast of characters, Sheen conjures a multitude of accents and delivers rapid-fire conversations between them. He's in step with the text at every turn; when situations become fraught or dangerous, Sheen ramps up the tension exquisitely. Thanks to Pullman's intricate storytelling and Sheen's propulsive narration, listeners will be on the edge of their seats right up to the cliff-hanger ending.” (AudioFile)

I am disappointed with the new book. don't miss me, it's great, but just a few characters that aren't explored deeply enough are introduced and some plot points are just pushed too much. while in the original books I never knew what was going to happen, here I could predict the book in advance after a few chapters. it feels like instead of having been constructed in the moment, this book had the end or story written first, and then the rest of the chapters was filled in one by one (exaggerated but kinda true) still a fan though, and still liked it
Disappointed

Reading the book yourself is fun but in this case I would certainly recommend for everyone who is interested to listen to it in audio format! Michael Sheen brings the story across expertly and gives it such rich atmosphere and complexety that it almost feels like you just saw it happen in front of your own eyes! He is excellent at constructing and depicting the different personality traits of each character merely by the use of voice and tonality! A pleasure to listen to!
story:
As for the story itself, this one is much more complex than its prequel "La Belle Sauvage". Whereas "La Belle sauvage" could easily be read by older children, who have read the "His dark materials" series beforehand, I would recommend for them to wait a few years until they read/ listen to this one. Not only does it have a more complex storyline, it also includes themes more adult than its prequel. Though it has a colourful, fantasy looking cover, it's definitely not a children's book.
Otherwise this is a good adventure narrative, all set in Lyra's world which includes deamons and other creatures part of the "secret Commonwealth". It's also a sort of coming of age story for Lyra, who may be 20 already, but of course coming of age isn't limited to puberty. Apart from that it is a story with multiple narrative arcs that all lead to some bigger picture which is still unknown thus far and will be explored in the third book of the series.
Conclusion:
If you enjoyed "His dark materials" and/ or other books by Philip Pullman set in this world, you will probably enjoy this one, though it is more adult and darker than the others. If you're a newcomer and you've read "La Belle sauvage" , I would recommend to also read "His dark materials", no matter what age you are. As for this one, it is quite lengthy and you'd have to enjoy a long adventure tale and when you're still new to this world, it might be a bit too intense to keep you going all the way to the end, if you're not really interested in it all.
Fantastic speaker, mostly good storytelling
