The audiobook of The Colour of Magic is read by Colin Morgan (Merlin; Testament of Youth; Belfast). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.
'It was octarine, the colour of magic. It was alive and glowing and vibrant and it was the undisputed pigment of the imagination . . .'
Somewhere between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a magical world not totally unlike our own. Except for the fact that it travels through space on the shoulders of four giant elephants who in turn stand on the shell of an astronomically huge star turtle, of course.
Rincewind is the world's worst wizard who has just been handed a very important job: to look after the world's first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land. Unfortunately, their journey across the Disc includes facing robbers, monsters, mercenaries, and Death himself.
And the whole thing's just a game of the gods that might send them over the edge . . .
You can listen to the Discworld novels in any order, but The Colour of Magic is the first book in the Wizards series.
The Colour of Magic is the first book in the Discworld series and was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Perfect!

As for the audiobook specifically, Colin Morgan is simply perfect for the role, and I wonder if this has to do exclusively with his stint as young Merlin in the eponymous TV show, or if he is simply born for this type of story. I wholeheartedly recommend giving this a listen!
Best enjoyed if you're already a fan.

Very intriguing introduction to discworld with a story the could be more compelling

There are a lot of things to like: nice ideas, interesting world building, references to pop culture, unpredictable story, witty puns, wonderful narrators.
Yet, I often found my thoughts trailing. Why?
Most of it was thanks to the tone being too lighthearted. No matter what happens, the text is written (and interpreted by the voice actors) in a way, that ensures the listener at all times, that it’s all gonna be fine. You never feel like there is anything at stake at any time. The protagonists are gonna be fine. Nothing seems to be of real consequence for them. And whenever horrible things happen to any other character, the tone still does not change. It’s always lighthearted. I get it is supposed to be a parody, but this one I simply don’t enjoy.
Another thing I did not enjoy, was the fact, that there where hardly any female characters there. Usually just briefly on the side. Usually naked and/or love interest of sorts. Maybe due to the times it was written in. It was too noticeable.
I will try a different disc world novel at a later point. This was his first one, after all. But for now, I am left rather disappointed.
Not my taste
