The story is amazing, filled with twists and turns, which are not obvious as in other books. the performance is also amazing, the author is a great narrator, the cast was well picked. the only downside is that audible's chapters are not aligned with the book chapters which is a pain if you want to navigate them.

In the debate people have over sequels versus originals, I had have to chalk one up for the sequel camp. Having just listened to 'The Golden Compass', I wouldn't believe Philip Pullman could top himself! But he does! The second book of the 'Dark Materials' trilogy begins with the introduction of Will Parry. Twelve years old, smart, and fiercely protective of his mother and in self-defense he murders someone. Consequently, this sends him on a wild chase that at its' end finds him face to face with our heroine, Lyra. What happens then, and how their individual quests are related through possibly hundreds of worlds is the main story of 'The Subtle Knife'.
I loved this audio book. I really liked the addition of Will, and the beautiful friendship he and Lyra develop. I thought the action never let up for a second, and had no idea where it was headed. I also loved the focus moving from just Lyra, as it was in the first book, to ample time with all the other various characters. It made them more tangible, more easy to connect with.
The only thing that's misleading about the book is its category: A fairy tale to share with the kids. It's not! Pullman is constantly making you question who's bad and who's good. Pullman as a storyteller and the whole cast of speakers are performing as good as in the first audio book. I can't wait listening to part three! Cause this one ended as a true cliff hanger!

kurz und knapp:
- die geschichte ist sehr gut und spannend, auch, wenn sie als hörbuch ihre längen hat (selbst lesen macht da teilweise mehr spaß).
- sie nach 'la belle sauvage' zu hören, war allerdings für mich etwas schwierig, denn der großartige michael sheen liest einfach zu genial.
- ganz furchtbar fand ich die musik. mit einem orchester eingespielt, hätte ich mich mit ihr arrangieren können. dies hier tut einfach nur weh.

dennoch - ich würde jedem, der freude an phantasievollen geschichten hat, empfehlen, pullman zu lesen und zu hören. so auch dieses buch.

eine überschrift mit mindestens 128 zeichen? nun gut: herrschaften, lest und hört pullman!

Würdige Fortsetzung des ersten Teils! Lyra trifft in einer anderen, neuen Welt auf Will, einen Jungen ihres Alters, mit dem sie gemeinsam ihr Abenteuer fortsetzen muss. Viele neue Figuren kommen hinzu, aber auch die alten vertrauten Charaktäre tauchen wieder auf. Die Geschichte wird komplexer und verliert nie an Spannung.
Auch die Inszenierung ist extrem gelungen und ein echtes Hörvergnügen!!

die geschichte ist fast zu actionreich und dadurch etwas sprunghaft, liest sich fast wie ein drehbuch.

As a fantasy addicted person, I love the story. The speaker does a good job and I appreciate to listen to his voice. What I cannot understand is why there had to be this awful music between chapters. It really hurts the ear.
