Hill has so much talent to burn that he can pull off just about any style, imagine himself into any person and convincingly portray any place or time. The Nix is hugely entertaining and unfailingly smart, and the author seems incapable of writing a pedestrian sentence or spinning a boring story
There is an accidental topicality in Hill's debut, about an estranged mother and son whose fates hinge on two mirror-image political events - the Democratic Convention of 1968 and the Republican Convention of 2004. The Nix ist einfach großartig, irgendwie ein Krimi ohne je kriminell zu werden. Kein Mörder, viele Mörder und nicht von Menschen sondern von Ideologien, Gesellschaften, Strukturen, familiärem Glück. The Nix ist Veränderung und eine Analyse dessen was sich verändert. Sogar Videospiele werden hier literaturreif. Für The Nix müsste man einen 6. Stern vergeben können.

Auch der Sprecher ist grandios. So wie er die Charaktere mimt ist einfach ein Genuß. Wie er die unausstehliche Paula in ihrem jammernden Singsang perfekt inszeniert, sowas hört man nicht alle Tage.

I laughed a lot while reading this book, though it is full of painful truths about life in our world. A commentary on modern life driven by an engaging story and sympathetic protagonist, which is brought to a beautiful conclusion at the very last. It's almost a poem, it's so beautiful (and fun!).
