I enjoyed this much more than I expected to. The depth of the characters was excellent, and their inner lives were very entertaining. The social commentary was also enjoyable though frequently less believable as it was exaggerated beyond reality. But I even started to like that in its own way. And the speaker was one of the best I’ve ever listened to.

Wunderschönes Buch brillant vorgelesen, Geschichte toll und sehr gut geschrieben, spannende Protagonisten, ich habe es von Anfang bis Ende nicht weglegen wollen, absolut empfehlenswert!

This is a truly exceptional novel.
On the surface, it introduces us to Jack and Elizabeth, married for 20 years and feeling jaded and in need of a perk after having met under unusual circumstances and believing that they were „meant to be“.
Under the surface, the book dives deep into human psychology, modern society , social media and human need and greed; holding a mirror to our faces showing us how very much our so called free will is manipulated and influenced by forces we most often don‘t even recognize.
We travel back in time into the protagonists’ pasts and ultimately into our own: realizing that at the core of all happiness, we foremost need to acknowledge our own weakness and fear.
Despite the book’s grand scope, the author manages to pull everything together and bring things to a satsisfying end which leaves the reader vulnerable but content.
The narrator does an excellent job, especially when portraying the absurdities and struggles of modern life with an almost manic tone which shows how out of step we are with the natural pace of life.
A must-read, especially for readers who also were young adults in the 90s, and an overall masterpiece.

Bravo!!! This was one of the rare books that made me feel totally empty when I had finished it and yet so much richer. A powerful story, masterfully crafted and superbly narrated. An unreserved recommendation.
