What a piece of literature!

Nathan Hill developes an authentic image of an age and a family, and surpasses Franzen in doing so. The plot is wonderfully linked over the years, the language is not contrived but educated to the true sense of the word, the characters are authentic in their flaws but never plaintive, and Ari Fliakos follows their every mood with a huge range of intonation.

Besonders in der Original-Lesefassung von Ari Fliakos ist dieser üppige Roman ein endloser Genuss.
Dieser Sprecher ist einfach genial.
Ich habe das Hörbuch jetzt zum zweiten Mal genossen und zwischendurch wieder das eine oder andere Kapitel im "Nix" gelesen - das kommt bei mir nur sehr selten vor. Die wunderbaren Charakterisierungen, der subtile Humor in den Kabinettstückchen um die Nebenfiguren sowie die treffende stilsichere Sprache machen Hills Werk schlicht "outstanding".
Wer einigermaßen gut Englisch verstehen kann, greife zu den Originalen, obwohl ich nach Einblicken in die deutsche Übersetzung annehme, dass deren Schwächen für den Durchschnittsleser nicht so gravierend sind, wie es manchmal dargestellt wird.

the best audio book I've been listening to in a very, very long time. "The Interestings" was great. "Here I Am" was incredibly good. But "The Nix" - absolutely outstanding. I understand the German translation is not so good. So let Ari Fliakos read this book to you - it'll make you lough and cry and extremely sad once you've reached the inevitable end. Thank you, Nathan, thank you, Ari. Thank you so much.

Tolles Buch, sensationeller Sprecher!

Hat Ihnen Ari Fliakos an der Geschichte etwas vermittelt, was Sie vielleicht beim Selberlesen gar nicht bemerkt hätten?

"The Nix" würde mir auch als Buch zum Lesen sicher gut gefallen, aber Ari Fliakos hat den Figuren und der Geschichte in einer Weise Leben gegeben, wie es meiner Phantasie sicher nicht annähernd so gut gelungen wäre. Alle Nuancen des Buchs ob lustig, traurig, spannend - wurden durch den Sprecher nochmals hervorgehoben. Ein Hörgenuß wie ich ihn bisher noch nicht erlebt habe.

Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?

Die Geschichte ist kurzweilig, zum Teil richtig lustig, so daß ich laut lachen musste, interessant und aufschlussreich (Chicago 1968). Nie langweilig, oft überraschend, immer interessant - kurz ein tolles Buch und in Verbindung mit Ari Fliakos das mit Abstand beste Hörbuch für meinen Geschmack.

Brilliant

The main reason I couldn't stop listening was not so much to find out how the story proceeds, but the writing itself. I didn't experience this in years. I loved the subtle sense of humour showing in those daily situations everyone can relate to. All in all very analytical and even therapeutic at times. Authentic.
The interpretation is also extraordinary. Loved it!

It's a very complex story, but even in the smallest detail it carries a picture of an era from the sixties til today.

Great book, where everyone finds something

Cannot remember when i have enjoyed a book quite so much. Thank the author of not diluting his thoughts and opinions and for a careful handling of the english language.
