#1 New York Times Bestseller

A 2025 best book of the year so far by The New York Times, The Economist, NPR, and more

Careless People is darkly funny and genuinely shocking...Not only does [Sarah Wynn-Williams] have the storytelling chops to unspool a gripping narrative; she also delivers the goods."–Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times

“When one of the world’s most powerful media companies tries to snuff out a book—amid other alarming attacks on free speech in America like this—it’s time to pull out all the stops.”–Ron Charles, The Washington Post

An explosive memoir charting one woman’s career at the heart of one of the most influential companies on the planet, Careless People gives you a front-row seat to Facebook, the decisions that have shaped world events in recent decades, and the people who made them.

From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Sarah Wynn-Williams tells the wrenching but fun story of Facebook, mapping its rise from stumbling encounters with juntas to Mark Zuckerberg’s reaction when he learned of Facebook’s role in Trump’s election. She experiences the challenges and humiliations of working motherhood within a pressure cooker of a workplace, all while Sheryl Sandberg urges her and others to “lean in.”

Careless People is a deeply personal account of why and how things have gone so horribly wrong in the past decade—told in a sharp, candid, and utterly disarming voice. A deep, unflinching look at the role that social media has assumed in our lives, Careless People reveals the truth about the leaders of Facebook: how the more power they grasp, the less responsible they become and the consequences this has for all of us.

Kritikerstimmen

'Devastating . . . funny . . . highly enjoyable . . . A Bridget Jones’s Diary-style tale of a young woman thrown into a series of improbable situations'—The Times

'Amazing: of all the books in all the world Mr Free Speech Zuckerberg wants to ban, it’s the one about him'—Marina Hyde, Guardian

"A darkly hilarious, shocking tale that starts as farce and ends as tragedy. It combines withering portraits of Facebook’s insular, callous leadership with harrowing details of what Wynn-Williams calls the company’s “lethal carelessness” on the global stage.”–Michelle Goldberg, The New York Times

A very astonishing look behind the scenes of what has driven a brand new era of politics through the threads of social media.

The author provides a unique take of
the narcissistic carelessness that led to major global events in recent years, and may continue to shape the course of our history in years to come.

Additionally, there are several shocking revelations regarding the political theater within Facebook/Meta, and how it impacts the life of its employees and their families.

Deeply Insightful and Alarming

Hearing about the inner workings of a company like Facebook is a must obtain information for basically everybody today.

Must read in the current times

For large parts of this, I was in disbelief - while also being hyper-aware that everything completely tracks with what we already know about Meta, Facebook, and Silicon Valley. It's a must-read if you want to understand the forces shaping our society, and how those forces are rooted in the deeply America-centric, narcissistic megalomania of petulant man-/woman-children and their whims.

I’m usually skeptical of books read by the author instead of a professional narrator, but here it genuinely adds to the authenticity.

Shocking in a “nothing new” way

Die Autorin selbst erzählt ihre Lebensgeschichte und Motivation, wieso sie zu Facebook wollte. Spannende Anektoten, Einblicke in eine ganz andere Welt.

Sehr spannend und persönlich erzählt

This was a very interesting story to listen to. Since Zuckerberg got worse in the last two years (and even more so recently, when I reconsider that terrible Rogan interview) it really didn’t surprise me to hear all of the stuff in the book.

Still, it is a cautionary tale for each and everyone of us to mind what we do with social media. Social media is not healthy, but how our data is used is really disturbing. And how they do not give a sh*t about what happens when their tool is missed and they won’t own up to it, makes me sick.

The narration was alright, the story could have been edited a bit better, as it felt like a bit of a loose collection of anecdotes and was a bit all over the place.

Cautionary Tale

Sarah wraps the readers around her fingers in the first pages into her personal experience, which gives a flavor of a good story telling.
She opens up important points that, by now, the majority of the attentive people are suspicious of, but are systematically denied by FB and other big techs. It’s a blow of fresh air to read her and see that, despite of all pressure from the super powerful, they cannot silence the strong ones.

A must read

This was excellent! I can't really call it "eye-opening", because I had such a thoroughly negative opinion of Zuckerberg & Co. even before I listened to Wynn-Williams' account - none of her revelations actually surprised me.

Even though it had no shock value for me, I found the book extremely interesting and also kind of heartbreaking because, as the author writes in her very last chapter, "it really didn't have to be this way".

While I love the title (and the literary quote it's taken from), "careless" is a far too mild description for Facebook's leadership team: They are more than just careless. They are utterly unscrupulous, ruthless, greedy and obsessed with power and growth. If they ever posessed some kind of moral compass, they lost it somewhere along the way. How do people like that sleep?! (No, strike that, the answer is obvious: They sleep very well. You'd need a social conscience - any kind of conscience really - to be bothered by the consequences of your actions.)

I wonder what went through the author's head when she saw Zuckerberg along with all the other tech billionaires sucking up to Trump after his reelection. What does she think of all the terrible (right-wing, MAGA-inspired) decisions the company has taken since then? Things were bad enough when she left back in 2017, but they've become a lot worse since then. "More masculine energy", my ass!

The audiobook is read by the author herself, which I always consider a bonus in a memoir. Wynn-Williams does an excellent job, too, I really enjoyed listening to her voice and accent.

Highly recommended!

More than just careless...

Brilliant

I did not have a good view of Facebook, but the stories in this book confirmed my worst fears and even created more.
It's a great showcase of how modern capitalism has failed our societies and should be used as a study case on how things can go wrong when people in leadership roles have no moral fiber.

Enlightening, to say the least

Bisschen zu viel personal drama manchmal. Und die gute frau schreibt sich bissle sehr zur Heldin um. Aber wunderbar wegzuhören wenn man sich nur ein bisschen für diese Abgründe interessiert.

Man ahnte es ja.
