#1 New York Times Bestseller

A 2025 best book of the year so far by The New York Times, The Economist, NPR, and more

Careless People is darkly funny and genuinely shocking...Not only does [Sarah Wynn-Williams] have the storytelling chops to unspool a gripping narrative; she also delivers the goods." -Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times

“When one of the world’s most powerful media companies tries to snuff out a book — amid other alarming attacks on free speech in America like this — it’s time to pull out all the stops.” –Ron Charles, The Washington Post

An explosive memoir charting one woman’s career at the heart of one of the most influential companies on the planet, Careless People gives you a front-row seat to Facebook, the decisions that have shaped world events in recent decades, and the people who made them.

From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Sarah Wynn-Williams tells the wrenching but fun story of Facebook, mapping its rise from stumbling encounters with juntas to Mark Zuckerberg’s reaction when he learned of Facebook’s role in Trump’s election. She experiences the challenges and humiliations of working motherhood within a pressure cooker of a workplace, all while Sheryl Sandberg urges her and others to “lean in.”

Careless People is a deeply personal account of why and how things have gone so horribly wrong in the past decade—told in a sharp, candid, and utterly disarming voice. A deep, unflinching look at the role that social media has assumed in our lives, Careless People reveals the truth about the leaders of Facebook: how the more power they grasp, the less responsible they become and the consequences this has for all of us.

Kritikerstimmen

One of TIME'S Must Read Books of 2025

"Devastating . . . funny . . . highly enjoyable . . . A Bridget Jones’s Diary-style tale of a young woman thrown into a series of improbable situations" - The New York Times

"Amazing: of all the books in all the world Mr. Free Speech Zuckerberg wants to ban, it’s the one about him'"- Marina Hyde, Guardian

"Jaw-dropping . . . A tell-all tome" - Financial Times

"A darkly hilarious, shocking tale that starts as farce and ends as tragedy. It combines withering portraits of Facebook’s insular, callous leadership with harrowing details of what Wynn-Williams calls the company’s “lethal carelessness” on the global stage.” –Michelle Goldberg, The New York Times

“The book...reads like a spicy office memoir if your officemates travel by private jet and your boss asks for a rally of 1 million people” –Ron Charles, The Washington Post

“Careless People is really well-written, funny, horrifying, and quite compelling. I was on the edge of my seat, turning pages as fast as I could and ended up reading the book in less than a day. I cackled. I gasped. I laughed. I cringed. I cackled some more. I cringed some more.”-Roxane Gay

“This book is unbelievable and necessary. First off, it’s wonderfully written, propulsive, novelistic, and LOL at times. It details the morally bankrupt forces atop Facebook who are personally, knowingly responsible for a swath of crimes against yes, humanity…I so, so recommend this book. It’s a zippy read, and like I said, at times truly funny to be in the room where it happens with these morally bankrupt snowflakes…an amazing gift that this book was written.”-Maria Semple

Bisschen zu viel personal drama manchmal. Und die gute frau schreibt sich bissle sehr zur Heldin um. Aber wunderbar wegzuhören wenn man sich nur ein bisschen für diese Abgründe interessiert.

Man ahnte es ja.

A very astonishing look behind the scenes of what has driven a brand new era of politics through the threads of social media.

The author provides a unique take of
the narcissistic carelessness that led to major global events in recent years, and may continue to shape the course of our history in years to come.

Additionally, there are several shocking revelations regarding the political theater within Facebook/Meta, and how it impacts the life of its employees and their families.

Deeply Insightful and Alarming

Hearing about the inner workings of a company like Facebook is a must obtain information for basically everybody today.

For large parts of this, I was in disbelief - while also being hyper-aware that everything completely tracks with what we already know about Meta, Facebook, and Silicon Valley. It's a must-read if you want to understand the forces shaping our society, and how those forces are rooted in the deeply America-centric, narcissistic megalomania of petulant man-/woman-children and their whims.

I’m usually skeptical of books read by the author instead of a professional narrator, but here it genuinely adds to the authenticity.

Shocking in a “nothing new” way

I’ve been critical of Meta and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, for years—especially after Cambridge Analytica and The Social Dilemma. Careless People doesn’t reveal new scandals, but it offers a stark portrait of the company’s core carelessness. It exposes how Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg consistently prioritized growth over accountability, the hypocrisy behind “Free Speech” rhetoric and Sandberg’s „Lean In“, and how Zuckerberg’s social and emotional apathy—paired with a childlike attitude toward responsibility—allowed Meta’s most damaging practices to flourish unchecked. Some may think we can’t live without their services. I would argue: we must.

This was a very interesting story to listen to. Since Zuckerberg got worse in the last two years (and even more so recently, when I reconsider that terrible Rogan interview) it really didn’t surprise me to hear all of the stuff in the book.

Still, it is a cautionary tale for each and everyone of us to mind what we do with social media. Social media is not healthy, but how our data is used is really disturbing. And how they do not give a sh*t about what happens when their tool is missed and they won’t own up to it, makes me sick.

The narration was alright, the story could have been edited a bit better, as it felt like a bit of a loose collection of anecdotes and was a bit all over the place.

Cautionary Tale

Wow, just... I finished listening in recodärd time and boy, is it worth it. As advertised a darkly funny (at times more dark or funnier) memoire that gives a deep behind the curtain look into the goings on of the jetsetting elite of Facebook/Meta leadership. Bboth humanizing the people involved in a way that is not slickly produced social media influencer content and drawing the curtain back on just how much the world has been and is currently still being impacted by the willful, often times arbitrary and ultimately self-serving decisions made by a handful of people that derive their power from how much money they hold to insulate them from personal and global accountability.
And one might argue that the author views all this through a deeply personal (with the work she was doing for Facebook to have enough of a negative impact on her as an individual, her family and her professional life as to account for a more unfavorable lense) level as well as a profound ideological disagreement that would ostensibly color her narrative as selective. There is of course that. But also, not only does she make a point to include anecdotes of personal growth, individual kindness and selctive altruism about these powerful people she unmasks with this narrative, but also are the observable truths of our reality today entirely on track with what's described. An absolutely essential read towards understanding how today's social media landscape shaped as well as instrumentalized the societal collapse of liberal democracy we're watching these days and should all try to work to prevent and a real look at how the sausage got made, to possible help develop a playbook against the detrimental effects of today's digital culture and services. Very much recommended, can't wait to be terrified and saddened, as well as buyoed encouraged by more of this author.

Underpinning visible reality

Sarah wraps the readers around her fingers in the first pages into her personal experience, which gives a flavor of a good story telling.
She opens up important points that, by now, the majority of the attentive people are suspicious of, but are systematically denied by FB and other big techs. It’s a blow of fresh air to read her and see that, despite of all pressure from the super powerful, they cannot silence the strong ones.

Tolles Buch!

Wahnsinnig spannend und traurig
