Continuing the story begun in The Hobbit, this is the first part of Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings.

Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power – the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring – the ring that rules them all – which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

There is not much to say about the book itself. Probably everybody has heard about, or watched at least the movie trilogy.

This Version of the audio book is read by Rob Inglis and a can very much recommend it. His voice and tone is fitting and he did a great job narrating.

Eine Möglichkeit, das berühmte Buch von Tolkien auch zu hören. Sehr gut hat mir die Untermalung an einigen Stellen mit Musik gefallen. Die Geschichte ist sehr einfühlsam erzählt und für jeden Fantasy Fan ein absolutes Muß. Die Personen der Hobbits sind sehr gut beschrieben und man kann sich diese auch bildlich vorstellen, ohne den Film gesehen zu haben.

Ok. The story is a bit dusty by todays fantasy standards. But its a classic. And it is really good. The voice acting is the thing that really makes it a masterpiece in my view!

if you even remotely like Lord of the rings, this is the audiobook for you! the Performance of the speaker (others would maybe call him singer) is breathtaking and the story is, as has been for 60 years, hall of fame

Inglis reads with just the right amount of calm and excitement adapting his voice well. He manages to read the elvish and such passages well and even the songs and poem match the tone and mood perfectly.

This book is the best, my favorite story by far. You have the feeling to be in the story, as if you yourself were Frodo and were going on that dangourus adventure. There's really good humor and and the explanations are the best. It makes me think alot about Harry Potter. All the details of the different mythologies and the Landmarks and the feelings of all the people.

Rob Inglis' audio books are by far the best audio books to lord of the rings I have listened to till now. They are not read as if part of the films, which seems to also be the case in Andy Serkis' interpretation, but as I believe Tolkien himself would have read it

Gut denn, da kann man ja nun trefflich streiten, ob man Tolkien hören oder gar sehen darf oder ausschließlich lesen muss... aber - am Anfang war das Wort, und um Tolkien gerecht zu werden, ist sicherlich das Buch ein guter, wenn nicht der beste und eigentlich einzige Starting Point. Danach aber bieten sich verschiedene Alternativen an, und alle haben ihre Vorteile. Lass' ich die Filme mal weg, so kann man in etwa diese Einteilung vornehmen:

1. Eine deutsche Hörspiel-Produktion von SWF+WDR, konzentriert sich auf die Entwicklung des Personals (wie werden Sam und Frodo zu denen, die sie am Ende sind), viel Humor, wenig Schlachtenlärm - brilliant umgesetztes Hörspiel (gibt's bei Amazon)

2. Die englische Hörspielversion (die mit Ian Holden u.a., gibt's hier bei audible), schon etwas mehr Schlachtenlärm als im deutschen Hörspiel, aber noch ertragbar und auch nicht ganz humorlos, gute Sprecher, wenn auch nicht ganz so gut wie im deutschen Hörspiel, Lieder ziemlich gut umgesetzt, insgesamt noch ganz gute Version.

3. Die US-amerikanische Hörspiel-Version (weiss nicht mehr, wo's die gibt, ist aber eh Mist), ziemlich schlecht, unglaublich viel Schlachtenlärm bei wenig Personalentwickling, überdies mag ich persönlich amerikanische Akzente nicht.

(die drei Hörspiele sind natürlich KEINE Übersetzungen, sondern drei eigenständige Versionen)

4. Die komplette englische Lesung von Rob Inglis - brilliant, der Vorleser drängt sich nicht in den Vordergrund, sondern lässt die Geschichte sprechen. Mag sein, dass das nur was ist für echte Tolkien-Fans, denn ca. 50 CDs (oder die entsprechende Länge als audible-Hörbuch) sind schon eine unzumutbare Menge, wenn man einfach mal so zwischendurch eine Fantasygeschichte hören will. Aber wenn man unbedingt Tolkien will, dann ist diese Version von Inglis sehr zu empfehlen. Ich habe sie trotz ihrer Länge schon ein paarmal gehört - but then again, I guess I'm almost a Tolkien-fanatic...

Bemerkungen zu Versionen von 'The Lord of the Rings'

I am reading these books for the first time in 2023 after having watched the movies hundreds of times and knowing them by heart. So this started as a kind of "I should do this before I turn 30" and turned into "WHY have I not done this sooner?!"

This reading experience has made me appreciate the movies even more, because you see the love that was poured into them and how true they wanted to stay to the source material. As I am not a native speaker in English, I was a bit worried, but knowing the story and being able to look up words in the e-book made this really easy to read! So don't be afraid do read the original! The narrator in the audio book is easy enough to understand and I appreciate the effort put into the performance (and the singing!!)

The Introduction by Tolkien was great and I found it delightfully sassy for a man born in the 19th century. At times, I had to giggle due to his use of words like "gay" and "queer" in their original meaning rather than the meaning we use them with today.

The book itself takes a lot of time to get started, but as it is time spend with hobbits, I don't want to complain. The characters are so different from the "serious" fantasy you often read today. They are goofy at times, they seem like magical weirdos but that is what made them more loveable to me. Apart from the obvious lack of female protagonists so far (apart from the distant but beautiful Arwen and Galadriel), the men in these books, especially the men of the company feel so... good? For a book written in the 30s and 40s these man are surprisingly emotionally available, vulnerably and supportive of each other. Not just badass fighters, but comrades and emotional supports! Their feelings for each other are plain without their care being labeled as inherently romantic and I really appreciate this!

A classic I have to recommend!
