Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the hugely anticipated sequel to TJ Klune's The House in the Cerulean Sea, one of the best-loved and best-selling fantasy novels of the past decade.

A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life, built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six magical and so-called dangerous children who live there.

Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. And he is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth; Zoe Chapelwhite, the island’s sprite; and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children.

But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve.

And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they’re at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur’s story.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it.

Most Anticipated from Goodreads, Paste, Polygon, BookBub, and more.

Kritikerstimmen

"Henning’s narration is captivating, filled with theatrical flair, musical intonations, growls, snorts, and impeccable comedic timing. He skillfully creates distinct, unique voices for the quirky cast of characters, making them feel real and relatable. Rather than simply listening, Henning pulls us into their world, making us care deeply about their journey. As listeners, we become fully immersed in both the story and the emotions of its characters. This audiobook is pure joy, packed with heartwarming characters that will captivate and remind you of the power of community."—Booklist

After The House in the cerulean sea left me with such a warm feeling, I was worried that Somewhere beyond the sea couldn't keep up. But for me TJ Klune hit the mark in keeping the colourful characters alive and expanding the world he created with so much love. Yes the messages he's trying to convey are not hidden behind complicated metaphors but I think that's part of the beauty of these two books. He shows that love and acceptance don't have to be complicated constructs but do exist and can spread if we are brave enough to embrace them.

Kept the feeling

This book was beautifully written and deeply moving—the perfect continuation of the story. The way it was read aloud brought it to life. T.J. Klune is an amazing writer and I truly hope we can read many more of his books.

Piece of art

I had to get into the story and the voice acting for a while, but then I quite enjoyed to dive into the world of all these lovable characters again. Not as outstanding as „The house in …“ but still absolutely worth listening to.

Heartwarming

I liked the story a lot, but the narrator's whiny-ness got annoying really quickly. I loved him doing the first book so was surprised to feel this way now, but the near- crying in every third sentence was pretty irritating.

Good story, annoying narrator

So wunderbar!

I was dissapointed beyond measure. what was that? he ruined Arthur for me. I dont like him that much anymore. and that yeti kid? hated him. cringe. he was just a plotdevice and not a very sympathetic one. and then attacking j.k. rowling at the end? eventhough he took the idea from a real historical event with indigenous kids being taken away and not mentioning it one bit? I mean sorry sir but thats not cool. do you want to be judged for that? leave others alone.

preachy and not the good kind

While I found part one heartwarming and sweet and somewhat believable despite the obvious magic and everything this part was all over the place. Not much plot or at least not a very organic one but a lot of slapstick comedy, ex macchina video calls, a ridiculously villainous villain, random magic and so many „conversations“ between characters that felt like educational leaflets on communication, parenting, rassism, body shaming and treatment of the queer community.

On the plus side there were charming moments about family and fatherhood.

More Fantasy Less Story
