'Stealthily funny, slyly smart, and remarkably touching' VERONICA ROTH, bestselling author of WHEN AMONG CROWS

Shesheshen has made a fatal mistake for a monster: she's fallen in love.

Shesheshen is a shapeshifter, who usually resides as an amorphous lump in the swamp of a ruined manor, unless impolite monster hunters invade intent on murdering her. Through a chance encounter, she meets a different kind of human, warm-hearted Homily, who mistakes Shesheshen for a human in turn.

Shesheshen is loath to deceive, but just as she's about to confess her true identity, Homily reveals she's hunting the shapeshifting monster that supposedly cursed her family. Shesheshen didn't curse anyone, but to give them both a chance at happiness, she must figure out why Homily's twisted family thinks she did. And the bigger challenge remains: surviving her toxic in-laws long enough to learn to build a life with the woman she loves.

A glorious, funny, occasionally slightly violent love story which asks us to examine - and re-examine - the meaning of legacy, family and love. Winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel!

This was just the eary sapphic fantasy I was looking for! Easy accessable fantasy world and a whole new concept of main character. It's not "Beauty and the Beast" and but felt just as much magical. You will not get bored with this sapphic romantasy, well if you grasp the idea of loving someone so much you want to eat them or maybe save them cause you can't eat them twice.

It had good tension and plottwists. As an writer I'm pretty jealous of this idea and execution, as a reader I'm very satisfied by having read a fabulous book. The narrator did a really great job, I have nothing to complain and I usually do so very quickly, so that's a big compliment.

Maybe I'll throw myself down a cliff next year for the change of meeting someone like Shesheshen ❤️ 🫠

I devoured this!

Ever thought about wrapping tentacles around your annoying mother in law and dissolving her head in digestive juices? Shesheshen has a hard time not to when she meets her girlfriend's horrible family (which could have been a bit more facetted, but it's a monster story).
Between struggling with the rules of "civilization", getting used to weird feelings towards a human, and wrangling offspring Shesheshen is both (overly/uncharacteristically?) eloquent, full of clear insights, and utterly confused. The things people do to perfectly fine prey...!
Read in a dry tone befitting this relatable monster. With occasional editting hiccups.

Hilariously deadpan monstrosities
