A resourceful guy the autor created here. I love this series - intelligent crime stories, well written and funny. It is a pitty that women are not portrayed as strong it would the normal nowadays. The rest of this historical crime story is rather modern. it just lacks this aspekt concerning women. Sadly.

Rich period detail, humor, tends at times to be too “educational” in effort to blend modern sensitivities with Victorian authenticity. Classic all—knowing mentor vs naive acolyte dealing with cultural issues of the era that are mirrored - or repeated - today. Ultimately satisfyingly dramatic and I consider one of best Victorian series in this style.

The story is interesting. But I just didn’t get fixed to the series, so I won’t join all books of it.
All in all a recommendation.

Barker and the people who belong to his team are fascinating.

The reproduction of antisemitic and racial stereotypes, the constant use of slurs, down to talk about eugenics - it’s all bad, but then follows a sentence Barker: people are genuinely worried about the influx of immigrants, they just need to let steam off“ - and my stomach turns. That’s when the main characters and the book lost me
