Before Jack the Ripper terrorised London, Police Inspector Samuel Ravenscroft patrolled the streets of Whitechapel. Clever and hard-working, Ravenscroft nonetheless has the worst record in the force. He lets a murderer escape during a chase and is banished to the spa town of Malvern for a water treatment to cure his asthma. Ravenscroft accepts a dinner invitation from a new acquaintance, Jabez Pitzer. Before dinner, the maid finds Pitzer slumped over his desk - dead. Ravenscroft immediately recognises the signs - Pitzer has been poisoned. But the local authorities are reluctant to believe there is a murderer in Malvern. Hungry to prove himself, Ravenscroft is determined to solve the case. But the bodies mount up. Someone is killing local luminaries.

Spannende Geschichte und ein ausgezeichneter Erzähler. Schon lange nicht mehr so schönes britisches Englisch gehört.

Sehr unterhaltsam. Sympatische Charaktere und spannende Geschichte. Ich finde den Sprecher sehr angenehm, allerdings muss man aufpassen, da er die verschiedenen Rollen manchmal nicht wirklich viel anders liest.

Story is a bit strange in our time but maybe possible in the given setting:
I asked myself which sexual didease comes from whores and infects children of others while inception.
There is an inspector on vacation but working full time on a case far away from his jurisdiction.
There is a woman who obviously is the searched murder of his actual case and he didn’t recognise that. Maybe in the next book of this series.
Except that the story is a bit twisted with false leads so it is not that easy to recognise the murder but at the end it’s obvious.
All in all a recommendation!

the story is ok, I'm from the area so it's nice to hear an audiobook set in familiar locations, and, truth be told, this may be biasing my review. The narrator is objectively excellent.
