Five friends, one sleepy village, and a mystery brimming with dark secrets.

England, 1941. The tranquil village of Crofter’s Green seems like a haven from the chaos of wartime. But when a local air raid warden is found dead in the village churchyard, five villagers--some getting on in years and none of them policemen--decide they need to uncover the truth.

Introducing the Homefront Sleuths:

  • Evie Harris, a newly arrived tea shop owner, seeking a fresh start after losing her husband.
  • Alice Greenleaf, the village herbalist, who has her own quiet strength and wisdom.
  • Blake Collins, a war-wounded schoolteacher, struggling with the scars of battle.
  • Harry Jenkins, a sharp-eyed retired detective from London, who thought his sleuthing days were over.
  • Dotty Baker, a resourceful young mother, juggling the demands of wartime life.

Together, they will form a close-knit circle, a found family in a world turned upside down. As they dig into the village’s secrets, they uncover more than just the identity of a killer—they discover the power of friendship and community in the face of adversity. But can they solve the mystery before the shadows of war claim another victim, and will Evie discover her inner culinary capabilities?

I liked it. Yes, it’s a bit slower, but a good story that unfolds. Crime, Storyline and Characters are in nice balance. I’m excited for the next one.

cozy crime

Cozy mystery with characters for all ages. Perfect title to throw on in the background and enjoy

Great performance and cozy background story

I enjoyed the setting and characters, but the ending was abrupt, with explanations based on plot points that had not come up at all previously.

Liked the setting but found the story frustrating

The incredibly long-winded descriptions of everything are my first indication that this book is not good. Then the plot simply doesn’t get going— not even when, after what feels like half the book, the first murder finally happens. There are numerous characters, each one flatter and more colourless than the next. I had trouble identifying one or two main characters. None of them is fit to be the hero of the story. Some characters are still being described until shortly before the end of the book!
There are very few suspects in this crime novel, making it easy to identify the culprits. There is never any suspense; the plot mostly drifts along pointlessly. The few important scenes are prepared so laboriously that the reader can see them coming from miles away. Incredibly poorly done! How I made it to the uninteresting ending is the greatest mystery in this entire crime novel.

Booooooooring

The story could be somewhat nice - a bit too long and too slow building up. Maybe it would be bearable with a better narration. This one simply makes it impossible to enjoy it.

I find it absolutely boring
