Über diesen Titel

A powerful century-old soldier returns to Earth from the Otherworld and attempts to reclaim his former life in this thrilling fantasy novel.

For 130 years, Kreig Wiedermann has fought: first, as a teenage recruit for the Holy Order; then, as a soldier for the Empire; and most recently, as an immortal godlike warrior devoted only to avenging himself. The lust of combat is all he knows—until a portal opens on the battlefield and brings him back to the world from which he came.

Despite the decades Kreig has survived in the Otherworld, only ten short years have passed on Earth, which means the life he considered lost forever might still be waiting for him. But rejoining humankind won’t be easy.

For one thing, the International Otherworld Combat and Research Organization isn’t about to let a monstrous stranger with an unfathomably high level just wander around without first making sure he won’t wreak havoc on the planet. For another, Kreig has been tortured, imprisoned, betrayed, and hunted for years; he’s got his own demons to confront before he can reunite with his family and take up a normal life.

Plus, there’s the little problem that not everyone thinks Kreig should be allowed to even dream of rehabilitation. And no matter how much he tries to leave his past behind, there are forces threatening to drag him back into his bloody legacy . . .

A bold and clever twist on a classic isekai tale, Returning to No Applause, Only More of the Same is a dramatic, character-driven fantasy that proves the old adage “There’s no place like home.”

I bought this book with a very low expectation, another LitRPG to pass time.

This one feels like an insult to customers. There is an of yet unexplored twist to the standard LitRPG setting, the return to 'normality' which in itself could be interesting, but the story is about as deeply developed as 'return to normality'. The rest of the story line basically is captured by this summary.

The moral conflict that evolves in most LitRPG around whether means justify ends, if self-defence is murder and if it's ok to kill players or NPC's is even measured by the standards of the genre at a new low. The MC starts out as a sociopathic genocidal killing machine with no empathy, remorse or consciousness. The only reason he does not kill every living being in his reach is coincidence, curiosity or disinterest. All it takes to cure him is a prison stay of a couple of months and learning to paint like Da Vinci in a couple of days, assisted by 'the system' and his innate divine nature.

Later when confronted with history lessons, the MC displays exceptional expertise in the intricacies of medieval warfare based on his century of life experience, even though this experience is based his divine powers enabling him to single handedly massacre whole armies. That of course is the qualification you need to understand ancient war fare and predict their results.

While the main character is a master strategist and even though he went to high school, he has a slight impairment when it comes to math. Addition and substraction are beyond him. But fear not, he discovers that all it takes him to master math is a empathic teacher which - of course - comes along as a beautiful girl who is initially scared to look at the hero but predictably falls in love.

Love of course is not a complex feeling. It's what a 6 year old kid means when they talk about the opposite gender and concepts of princesses and dragons. Of course the MC does not know what a date is. He believes meeting with his siblings whom he loves are dates. We witness his developing competency as love-maker with the prospect to become a get-layered hero in a future volume. Oh how we incels can empathise. Thanks god this book is gender-identity conform at the same time. A fellow outworlder shows of the fact that he has two fathers, none of them are his real fathers and they also do not have any involvement in the story, their sole purpose is to be gay and that teaches us that we have to be accepting and understanding - understanding of the fact that everything that is worth mentioning about these adoptive parents is how they employ their genitalia, everything else is irrelevant. We are all PC and this book won't score badly on this scale.

The MC is of course not really a sociopath. He is in his core the stereotype of a good-doer. Nevermind his firm conviction that the rule of the jungle is the true meaning of life, the strong have to replace the weak. This is the culmination of his military competence. You win by being a God-like entity that is to strong that the decision to win is the strategy and at the same time the innate truth of his existence as the ultimate reincarnation of power.

How did he become a God? Well, easy, he followed orders. He never stood for his believes, what is the value of conviction if conviction kills you (as it did his friends). But of course this is about progression. The MC learns the virtue of self-determination by not wanting to recount his genocidal experiences and surprised by himself rejecting a request to tell his story which is received with understanding and not eire. A new world opens up to the hero.

This is so ridiculous and unbelievable while at the same time showing the world view of an author that I would not entrust with staying alone with my kids for 5 minutes fearing what someone with such a meaningless moral compass might do to them.

I could go on ranting about basically ever word of this 'book'. It's not worth it. The speaker did a decent job, though I wonder whether he is in deep financial trouble for accepting this engagement.

Do yourself a favour, stay away from this abomination in disguise of an audio book..

The single most terrible Audio-Book in my Library
