Greg Egan concocts a fascinating and thought-provoking novel that explores the role of technology in creating alternate realities, blurring the lines between what is "real" and what isn't. In this future world of globalized economy and devastating climate change, Paul Durham has scanned multiple "Copies" of himself into his computer and becomes entangled with Maria, an Autoverse aficionado. Egan raises interesting questions about artificial intelligence and morality within a technological world, and it's a high concept that is brought to life by Adam Epstein, whose measured performance and faintly rumbling voice adds a palpable and dramatic intrigue to Permutation City.

Am relevantesten

The story itself is great, fans of hard sci-fi and cyberpunk are in for a treat. Realistic AI, psychology, mind uploading, cellular automata, fringe mathematics, surprise twists, ... Egan clearly knows his stuff and tells it well.

The choice of narrator is very unfortunate, though. Every sentence has the same "melody" - da Dah da Dah, da DAH da! As if there was an obligatory moment of mild surprise at the end of every single sentence, regardless of context or content. It never varies, and even though it isn't strictly monotone, the effect is the same. I won't even comment about the inappropriate accents, bad as they are, they're insignificant compared to the overall abysmal narration style. Also unfortunate that almost all of Egan's other audiobooks use the same narrator. I won't be buying any of them, but I may very well read the books the old-fashioned way.

I though about just returning this audiobook, but the story is good enough to put up with the awful narration. It gets easier to ignore after a while - just like (pre-AI) text-to-speech takes some time to get used to, you'll get used to the narrator's da-Dah-da sing-song and mentally add the correct emphasis yourself. But still, I struggle to imagine anyone hearing this guy talk and thinking it would be a good idea to let him narrate books...
