The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct and the half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind, but the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory.

Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. Mutated by radiation, they are better adapted to the new world. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on earth, living in the Moscow Metro - the biggest air-raid shelter ever built. Stations have become mini-statelets, their people uniting around ideas, religions, water-filters, or the need to repulse enemy incursion.

VDNKh is the northernmost inhabited station on its line, one of the Metro's best stations and secure. But a new and terrible threat has appeared. Artyom, a young man living in VDNKh, is given the task of penetrating to the heart of the Metro to alert everyone to the danger and to get help. He holds the future of his station in his hands, the whole Metro - and maybe the whole of humanity.

Empfehlenswerte Wiedergabe des Buches. Zwischenzeitlich etwas langatmig, insgesamt jedoch unterhaltsam und interessant. Den nächsten Teil der Reihe werde ich mir auch anhören.

Einer der besten Romane die ich kenne. Kaum ein Buch hat mich noch so lange nach dem Ende beschäftigt.
Der Autor zeichnet eine faszinierende, düstere Welt. Die Atmosphäre ist zum Schneiden dicht. Zudem legt er seinen Charakteren einige faszinierende philosophische Überlegungen in den Mund die einen zum Nachdenken bringen.
Die englische Vertonung ist exzellent und wird der Vorlage absolut gerecht.

Absolute Empfehlung

Die Story an sich ist sehr gut. Eine düstere, geheimnisvolle Atmosphäre umgibt die Moskauer Metro.
Die Charakterentwicklung des Protagonisten zieht sich durch das ganze Buch und verblüfft dann doch an ein, oder anderer Stelle.
Man ist stets über Gefühlen und Gedanken des Protagonisten Artjoms informiert und bekommt dadurch einen guten Einblick in sein Wesen.

An einigen Stellen konnte Rupert Degas, trotz seiner exzellenten Arbeit als Sprecher, nicht ganz klarstellen, wer gerade sprach, obwohl er doch durch sehr viele verschiedene Facetten den Charakteren einen Wiedererkennungswert gab. Dies ist denk auch den vielen Passagen geschuldet, welche wohl ausschließlich aus einer wörtlichen Rede bestehen.

Mir persönlich hat das Buch sehr gut gefallen, da ich ein großer Fan von eher düsteren Geschichten bin, welche an interessanten Orten spielen. Zeitweise war es etwas langatmig, was aber, wenn man durchhält, früher oder später einen Sinn ergibt.

There are a few thrilling moments but then there's a lot of lengthy passages about lore that doesn't really... matters for the plot and isnt that enjoyable as well but pretty bland in my opinion.

Less cool than I expected

I don’t get the hype around this book.
Maybe it has something to do with it having been cobbled together from a conglomerate of short stories. Maybe it’s something to do with the Russian style of writing (?).

The story was too episodical for me. Something that has been remarked on by other readers/critics. I do see the stories parallels in books like the Canterbury Tales, Simplicius Simplicissimus or the Hyperion Cantos.
Still Metro 2033 feels stiff and stale.

The main themes of the book are relayed within the first 50 pages and then just recycled again and again.

War and humanities urge for violence are denounced, but the protagonist and the story just continue wallowing in depravity and hopelessness.

In between I was wondering whether the author simply had a lust for hopelessness. Which might just be true considering the author was 19/20 years old when he copy pasted the book together from an internet forum.

I might be missing an important point about this book, however, I think I have the main aspects in hand.

I would recommend reading something else.
There are other, more cleverly written, books about post apocalyptic scenarios offering an actual analysis and insight into our modern society.
