This might just become my favorite book 2022. The Story, the characters, the magic system, it all just flows so naturally that I didn't want to stop listening for a moment. Not to mention Siho Ellsmore who was just perfect as a voice actor.

It had an about average start but the story developed in a good direction shortly later. As soon as I was about to get bored there was a surprising turn of events. It kept me listening with interest the whole time.

An awesome audiobook with catching story

The story started off on an interesting premise and while I'm usually a fan of technical details about half of the four hours I've listened to so far sound like bland live commentary of an MMORPG. I don't mind parallels but it seems like the author just copied the entire magic system from a table top RPG rulebook. There is only so many times you want to hear characters call their attacks by name, or hear about buffs and de-buffs. The only thing missing were iterations of damage numbers, seriously.

The narrator is good though, but there is only so much you can do while basically repeating RPG rules over and over.

Started off interesting

Everything is underdeveloped.

The writing uses way too many analogies. Everything needs a descriptive adjective, or simile.
one time, a character gets physically described as a round fruit with spikes... But nothing about his appearance has been described as spiky. It's just literary nonsense to sound clever.

the worldbuilding is just a patch. It's exactly our world... but with magic. Technology is the same. History is the same. Countries are the same. But magic is not a new thing in this world and everybody knows about it.
I expect some understanding about what kind of fundamental impact magic has on a society in my fantasy. History is complicated.

The plot feels like the cliff notes of a story. we have multiple time jumps that come out of nowhere. Instead of showing us the protagonists first month at magic school, we only get a sentence that she now knows more about magic then before. We don't even get a description what classes she has. all we get are practical exams to show her progress.

The characters are fine. A bit one note, but thats not a big problem here.

The reader is ok. She speaks clear and her voices are good. But she has some pauses in the reading that sometimes feel like a chapter break, or like an indication for a scene change. It takes getting used to, but is fine.
