The characters are another strong highlight. The narrator does a great job capturing their personalities, especially Catherine and her evolving emotional journey. Following her moral path is like an emotional rollercoaster—there are moments where you understand her choices, moments where you question them, and moments where you’re not even sure what the “right” choice would have been. That tension keeps the story compelling from start to finish.
One important thing to be aware of is that the main character is not a traditional “good guy.” In fact, the story constantly challenges the idea of simple good and evil. Instead, most characters exist in shades of gray, with some leaning darker than others. Catherine’s path is especially complex, and her decisions are often driven by survival, necessity, and ambition rather than clear moral ideals.
Her journey can often be summarized by the idea that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. That theme runs strongly through the story and gives it a thoughtful, sometimes unsettling depth.
Overall, the audiobook is highly enjoyable if you like morally complex characters, strong worldbuilding, and a story that constantly challenges traditional fantasy expectations.
