2 editions. 2 narrators. 1 thrilling story. You can enjoy Amber Benson's narration here.
"I love working with Audible, in no small part because they’re committed to doing what’s right, both for my books, and the people who listen to those books. There's a really excellent reason for Lock In to have two entirely different versions, so when it came time to make the audiobook, Audible did an ingenious thing: they asked both Wil Wheaton and Amber Benson to record entire versions of the book. As the author, I’m impressed with Audible’s commitment to my narrative - and I’m geeking out that both Wil and Amber are reading my book. This is fantastic." (John Scalzi)
A blazingly inventive near-future thriller from the best-selling, Hugo Award-winning John Scalzi.
Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever, and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent - and nearly five million souls in the United States alone - the disease causes "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.
A quarter of a century later, in a world shaped by what's now known as "Haden's syndrome", rookie FBI agent Chris Shane is paired with veteran agent Leslie Vann. The two of them are assigned what appears to be a Haden-related murder at the Watergate Hotel, with a suspect who is an "integrator" - someone who can let the locked in borrow their bodies for a time. If the Integrator was carrying a Haden client, then naming the suspect for the murder becomes that much more complicated.
But "complicated" doesn't begin to describe it. As Shane and Vann began to unravel the threads of the murder, it becomes clear that the real mystery - and the real crime - is bigger than anyone could have imagined.
BONUS AUDIO: Audible's audio edition of Lock In contains the bonus novella, Unlocked: An Oral History of Haden's Syndrome, written by John Scalzi and narrated by a full cast.

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

"he said"
Started well but the writting really ruined this for me. Hearing "he/she/they said" after literally every piece of dialog spoken by a character, even after single words, started to drive me crazy.
Maybe this would be less impactful reading a print version of this book, but I bet you cannot unhear the near constant "he said" "she said" after ever phrase when listening to this now.

A lethal virus but no zombies -- thank the heavens
This is my first John Scalzi novel, which I bought after having listened to The Dispatcher the other day. I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the short story. I'm grateful the author didn't jump on the bandwagon of all the zombie stories which are so prominent right now, but takes a whole different stance on the problem of a virus spread around the globe, which changes those affected if they survive in the first place.
We're thrown right into the story, where we're confronted with a murder, possibly having been committed by a Haden -- so called after the disease he once suffered from and survived.
As Chris Shane, a Haden's syndrome victim, and partner FBI agent Leslie Vann look into the death of a John Doe (it takes ages to find out the victim's identity), we learn more and more about the disease, the 'Hadens', the un-afflicted, and their relationship.
A new governmental bill has just been passed, which will affect the 'Hadens' in a bad way, and emotions run high.
The story takes lots of twists and turns, and although the solution does come as a surprise, the motivation behind it doesn't.
Wil Wheaton does a great job at narrating the story, but if you're so inclined, you can buy a version with a female narrator, cause Chris's gender isn't mentioned anywhere.
There's a bonus section at the end of the book, telling how it all began: the first Haden's syndrome victims, what it meant for the world's population in general, and the US population in specific, the helplessness, the rumours, the bills passed by government to deal with the disease, etc.
This part is narrated by various people, in some sort of interview style (without the questions), and it describes a possible scenario with all its ramifications, and it is pretty convincing! I think it is a stroke of genius that the author put this at the end of the book, because It would have taken too long until the start of the action had he put it at the beginning of the book, and people might not have gone on reading the story. As ist is, it is great that it expands the problems we've experienced during the story proper, and as such it was very interesting (but not necessary for the plot).
The main characters are well described, but there are a few of the sidekicks I'd have liked to get to know better. Still, this would probably have gone too far, and the book is great as it is.

Great reading of a great book...
What a great team John and Wil are... I got dragged into the story after the first few minutes and enjoyed the atmosphere, logic and plausibility of this sound future. Even at the end, or better after it, there was a surprise as the history of the disease causing the titeling lock in was explained in interview form.
No, I'm not giving another version of the story, just wanted to tell about my absolute satisfaction with it.
