Meddling gods. A magical card system. An apocalypse no one could have predicted.

Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends. He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that?

When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

Jake, wasting his day slacking off in the cooler, as he usually did, found himself alone in a completely new and very dangerous world. Can he learn to survive? Can he collect enough cards and create a good enough deck to fight back against the monsters that have overtaken his former home? And why are these strange people that look a lot like elves knocking on the door of the market he is hiding in and asking to buy some of his goods?

The gods may have stacked the deck against him, but Jake just might have a few cards up his sleeve that will help him survive.

    Plot-related MC retardation

Halfway through MC suddenly turns into Mr. Brainless because the plot only works with someone who's a total idiot for a day. That repeats whenever useful to the plot. Gets worse all the time.

    Narration is great, though.

    Not what you expect

Sadly the „market/Shopkeeper“ part of this book is super misleading and not at all accurate. The protagonist dosn‘t spend more then 15% of the book in or for the shop. Found this very missleading.
The story also suffers from a huge passing issue. Can’t recommend at all

    A pearl of its genre

One of the best books of this genre I listened to for quite some time. Can't wait for the next Audiobook.

A veeery mixed bag. But I kept listening

A sluggish but altruistic shopkeep meets sadist adversaries. He slowly becomes a sadistic creep himself, while still trying to keep the moral high ground. Unexamined use of time loops by the author, as well as arrogance and stupidity on the part of the foes finally make the MC reach a new pinnacle.

Disappointing, with a blank slate protagonist

This book fails to properly execute on its premise in my opinion. The ability cards are a cute idea, but the system as described lacks depth. The number and variety of cards shown in the story are pitifully small next to any roguelite deckbuilding video game you might conceivably compare this with. The book fails to make me feel like there is an infinite variety of cards out there. While the main character obtains a few powerful abilities and card combinations, this is almost entirely down to lucking into them. The protagonist does not make any obviously stupid choices where the card combining and sacrifice to level them is concerned, but neither is there anything in the way of brilliant munchkinry to be found here.

The combat seems like the least objectionable part of this, with sound tactical decisionmaking by the protagonist, though I can't help but notice that his main card combo is very all-or-nothing, which means it's always equally plausible for it to succeed or fail, depending on what is demanded by the plot.

However, what really killed my interest in the story is the sharp lack of characterization for the protagonist. There's almost nothing in the way of likes, dislikes, interests, goals, motivation or drive. Instead of proactively ensuring his survival and growth, the hero is a blank slate who seems content to be pushed along by the plot and otherwise does not seem to have any clue what he wants or how to go about getting it. This has all the hallmarks of bad self-insert fanfiction, and no amount of superficially interesting but shallow worldbuilding or supporting characters can rescue it. I stopped reading this story before the halfway mark and have no intention of finishing it.

    What an amazing catch!

How is this not in the Litrpg Top 10? So many loveable characters. Great plot! Any author who merges their two first books to ensure the value of their novel deserves more love! Absolutely worth your money and time! Cant wait for the continuation.
9/10 - Not as crunchy as I'd like, but amazing nonetheless.

    Let's Play personality Ping-Pong!

This book is a mess that spirals further and further out of control as it goes. The first third is fine, good even. I enjoyed the characters and the story until all of that was taken away. The rest of the book is about the main character's quest to get back to where he started. From that 1/3 mark, another power system gets piled on, then another. The main character shifts between 7 different styles of battle, none of which have anything to do with each other. Ideas get introduced and thrown out of the window and until slightly before the last hour of the book, I felt like giving this a 3 for story because it wasn't offensively bad, but within the last hour, the main character goes from trying to get back home to seeing a god who banished him because of course that's what a god does in this kind of book, only for Mr. main character to bend the rules of the world around him to kill the god, claim his power and declare war on all of the other gods.
    ???
How did we go from "I wanna go home and just be a shopkeeper" to "I killed a god and I'll do it again" within one hour of reading. Within the last 3 hours, Mr. main character periodically flops around between "I wanna be a shopkeeper" to "I wanna save my world" to "I wanna help the poor people in this big dystopian city that exists for some reason" and right back.

And that's just the story. No character stays around for more than a third of the book except the main character. The main character goes from emotion to emotion like an angsty teen. It's painfully obvious that this book was written by someone who just wanted to write something cool with reckless abandon, then they made up their mind to make something that at least wasn't edgy, only to loop right back around to torture, rebelling against the rulers and godslaying. Disappointing.

Tiefe Main Charakter Entwicklung Mittel-Freundschaften, deep reflections, überraschend Tiefe skill und System building.
spiralisiert aber in eine unerwartete Richtung.
