Somehow exciting

Definitely not what I expected from a magical shopkeeper, so enjoy the plot everybody!

One of the best narrators in the business of litrpg or in general. I hope there will be a second one in the future!

This book could probably have done with a different title and description.

This audiobook has a two-act-structure.
The first 10 hours are pretty much what it says on the tin they are.
However, at about the ten-hour-mark, the author decided to add horrifying torture to the "slice of life" story and for the second half of the book, the protagonist goes through the stereotypical power fantasy story with added PTSD where they are forcefully removed from the life they were building for themselves. Old characters are removed and are only ever referenced without appearing; seeking synergies within the magic system becomes breaking said system in "amazing protagonist ways that nobody has thought of before"; said protagonist keeps getting the tools to survive a situation moments before they become important. Such stories can be fun, and I feel like this probably was good practice for the author, but it reads like an episodic web novel more than like a book with a functional structure.
The first half of this book is exactly what it advertises itself as, and it was quite enjoyable for me.
The second half of this book is nothing like what it markets itself as, and I kept listening, hoping that it would return to its roots.
I can see what the author was going for; it simply wasn't what I wanted to have. For me, this was just a case of failed marketing. I won't return the book, but I won't buy subsequent parts of this series either. :)

very nice

was very entertaining to read and listen to. the story is competently written, however there is a bit of a cliffhanger teasing a sequel, so I hope there really will be one. otherwise, nicely done.

Great first 50%...

Book starts as advertised as a Shopkeeper collecting magical cards but in part 2 there is no more shopkeeping, the magic system is declared irrelevant and replaced and the new world is less magical and more industrial cooperation run by fantasy creatures... and we supersayajin our way through any problem by wanting it really hard... until mc fights gods.... nothing left of cozy magical market setup. It's not a bad story, but it builds a expectation and by part 2 tells a completely different story. If you want to write a powerfantasy write a powerfantasy but if you sell me a "Recettear" and start farming like a "Stardew Valley " try to keep somewhere in that area....

A pearl of its genre

One of the best books of this genre I listened to for quite some time. Can't wait for the next Audiobook.

Okay but some annoying flaws - Minor Spoilers!

Tldr:
- Serious moral flaws
- is more of a very advanced draft
- great worldbuilding, sadly lacks major exploration
- would love to read/hear the final version/fanfictions

Long version:

Jake is a shopkeep...for the first couple chapters. He becomes a magician, martial artist, scout and knight. He goes on to commit serious moral crimes, recognises them as such, regrets for a minute and then continues gushing about the loot he gained through his abhorrent behaviour. There are no major penalties for what he does. He largely gets rewarded.

While it is understandable not to want to confront your own failings he refuses to avoid further regret by reflecting in a serious way. His moral compass seems to be very vague - more of a scewed weighing scale - "I killed someone innocent...well lets give a beggar a coin. I am such a good person."
The author seems to realise that too because at the end of the whole thing he wrote along the lines of "Oh yeah I was bad...but there was so much going on...I could not have changed my behaviour in the...months I lay in bed."

Most of what happened to him could have been avoided by him stopping to think for a second.

I liked the rest of the elements of the story but he is rushed through each arc (yes nearly 21 hours weren't enough).
The worldbuilding hinted at whole story arcs that could have happened.

The narrator is largely smooth and pleasant to listen to but I found the voice of Willow annoying (I am sorry I cannot explain why).

What an amazing catch!

How is this not in the Litrpg Top 10? So many loveable characters. Great plot! Any author who merges their two first books to ensure the value of their novel deserves more love! Absolutely worth your money and time! Cant wait for the continuation.
9/10 - Not as crunchy as I'd like, but amazing nonetheless.

Glücklicherweise ist endlich der 2. Teil erschienen, nach viel zu langer Zeit.

Leider ist Travis Baldree nicht der Sprecher in den nächsten beiden Teilen, weil er bereits bis 2026 ausgebucht ist.
