A compelling novel of desire, secrecy, and sexual identity, In One Person is a story of unfulfilled love—tormented, funny, and affecting—and an impassioned embrace of our sexual differences. Billy, the bisexual narrator and main character of In One Person, tells the tragicomic story (lasting more than half a century) of his life as a “sexual suspect,” a phrase first used by John Irving in 1978 in his landmark novel of “terminal cases,” The World According to Garp.
His most political novel since The Cider House Rules and A Prayer for Owen Meany, John Irving’s In One Person is a poignant tribute to Billy’s friends and lovers—a theatrical cast of characters who defy category and convention. Not least, In One Person is an intimate and unforgettable portrait of the solitariness of a bisexual man who is dedicated to making himself “worthwhile.”

Geschichte
The opening sentence of John Irving's breakout novel, The World According to Garp, signals the start of sexual violence, which becomes increasingly political. "Garp's mother, Jenny Fields, was arrested in Boston in 1942 for wounding a man in a movie theater." Jenny is an unmarried nurse; she becomes a single mom and a feminist leader, beloved but polarizing. Her son, Garp, is less beloved, but no less polarizing.

As we grow older - most of all, in what we remember and what we dream - we live in the past. Sometimes we live more vividly in the past than in the present. As an older man, Juan Diego will take a trip to the Philippines, but his dreams and memories will travel with him; he is most alive in his childhood and early adolescence in Mexico. 'An aura of fate had marked him,' John Irving writes.

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Ruth Cole is a complex, often self-contradictory character — a "difficult" woman. Her story is told in three parts, each focusing on a crucial time in her life. When we first meet her, Ruth is only four. The second window into Ruth's life opens when she is an unmarried woman whose personal life is not nearly as successful as her literary career. The novel closes in the autumn of 1995, when Ruth is a 41-year-old widow and mother — and about to fall in love for the first time.

At first, the murder scene appears sad, but not unusual: a young woman undone by drugs and prostitution, her six-year-old daughter dead alongside her. But then detectives find a strange piece of evidence in the squalid house: the platinum credit card of a very wealthy - and long dead - steel tycoon. What is a heroin-addicted hooker doing with the credit card of a well-known and powerful man who died months ago? This is the question that the most junior member of the investigative team, Detective Constable Fiona Griffiths, is assigned to answer.

Fascinating story - not a boring moment.
Was hat Ihnen das Hörerlebnis von In One Person besonders unterhaltsam gemacht?
"In One Person" is a well-written story that is complex, but not difficult to understand. The different characters have a lot of depth and show why John Irving is one of the most successful authors of his time.
Wie hat Ihnen John Benjamin Hickey als Sprecher gefallen? Warum?
John Benjamin Hickey is an absolutely amazing narrator. Even though he doesn't do this regularly as an actor, his voice carries the story gracefully and it made the whole experience of this audio book even better.
Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?
I have read several of Irving's books and this is currently my favorite one. Brilliant plot and very entertaining.

Schade !

Tragicomic Sexual Odyssey in the Times of Aids
I am an ardent John Irving fan, but I struggled with this book, not because this book deals with difficult and controversial subjects like homosexuality, bi-sexuality, cross-dressing, and AIDs, but because I found the storyline somewhat flat and missing the usual Irving touch. It took me a while to warm up to it and overtime I became impressed by its openness and intimate honesty. There are parts where John Irving takes you down a well trotted path, especially when talking about wrestling, sexual diversity and adolescent self-discovery, but overall “In one Person” is an overwhelming odyssey of a young man finding his sexual identity. It is also a story about tolerance and prejudice and unfortunately most women in the novel are portrayed as especially scornful and bigoted.
“In one Person” is the story of Billy Dean, a young boy growing up with his divorced mother in his grandparent’s home. There seems to be some mystery concerning his long gone father and Billy does not really understand why. But what bothers Billy most, is his crush on the wrong people. He feels attracted to the young wrestlers in school, but he also likes the tall, mysterious town librarian Miss Frost, he even has a crush on his mother’s new boyfriend Richard. It will take time until Billy learns to accept his bi-sexuality, but regardless of all his numerous affairs, he has difficulties to find real love. This becomes very obvious, when the growing AIDS epidemic kills most of his friends and he is forced to rethink his own life.
It is a moving story, humorous at times, but mostly dead serious on important subjects. It is an important book, perhaps not for everyone’s taste.
