There are thousends of german sentences in this book. It remains a mystery to me why the reader, who obviously never learned german, could not even be bothered to look up on the internet, how a german ch or a z are pronounced. John Irving has a huge Fanbase in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. All of whom will be rather irritated by that sort of reading.

German quotations deserve a reader who knows how to speak german!

Wenn so ein Buch gesprochen wird, dann erwarte ich, dass der Sprecher deutsche Ausdrücke korrekt ausspricht. Es war sehr anstrengend zuzuhören mit den vielen falsch ausgesprochenen Wörtern. Es war keine Freude, das zu hören

Though it might not be Irving''s best work it still a classic Irving stories (no bears this time).
Some nice characters, nicely shaped through the book, easy to read, Nothing really new from a story telling point if view. If you like Irving you will like this one too.

Es liegt mir fern, irgendjemanden für die falsche Aussprache von Wörtern in einer Fremdsprache zu kritisieren - ABER wenn ein Sprecher dafür engagiert und bezahlt wird, ein Buch vorzulesen, in dem gefühlt jedes dritte Wort deutsch ist, dann wäre es von Vorteil, jemanden auszuwählen, der die deutsche Aussprache wenigstens im Ansatz beherrscht. Ich schließe mich den anderen negativen Rezensionen an: Es könnte einem eigentlich egal sein, aber diese unfassbar nervige Aussprache geht direkt an den Solar Plexus und macht aggressiv. Ich habe das Buch 4 Stunden vor Ende abgebrochen, weil ich Sorge hatte, beim nächsten „Nacktkaffee“ oder „Frau“ schreien oder etwas zerbrechen zu müssen.
