This was more of a homecoming for myself. I have enjoyed every bit of it. It amazingly capture this lost something we all from the diaspora have felt at one point in our lives.

I loved this book so much! It moved me, made me cry, made me wish it would never end and made me miss Ghana. In the words of one of the characters „I felt this book inside of me“

Unglaublich gutes Buch. Die Geschichte zeigt, den Verlauf der Zeit und der Menschen and it comes full circle at the end. Sehr gutes Buch, um sich vor Augen zu führen, dass es zu der Zeit der Versklavung Individuen waren- Menschen, die dem Leben und der Familie entrissen wurden. Wenn man als weißer Mensch über die Geschichte der Sklaverei lernt, lernt man das in Zahlen und nicht in Familiengeschichten. Dieses Buch bringt einem die Geschichten der Familien nahe. Sehr rührend.

Eine beeindruckende Geschichte, die sich wie eine Zeitreise anfühlt und Einblicke in grausame aber auch schöne Momente der Vergangenheit bietet. Ich musste manchmal weinen, so traurig sind einige Schicksale. Doch vor dem Hintergrund, dass dies tatsächlich Zeitgeschichte fiktional wiedergibt, ist es umso berührender. Anfangs hatte ich mir mehr zu den einzelnen Charakteren gewünscht, doch inzwischen sehe ich, dass durch die kürzeren Einblicke ein großes Gesamtbild geschaffen wird. Ich konnte viel lernen! Der Sprecher ist zudem fantastisch. Mit den unterschiedlichen Akzenten lässt er die Charaktere zum Leben erwachen.

I loved this so much. Some of my favorite quotes: “I am proud to be Asante, as I am sure you are proud to be Fante, but after I lost my brothers, I decided that as for me, Akosua, I will be my own nation.” And this one: “They would just trade one type of shackles for another, trade physical ones that wrapped around wrists and ankles for the invisible ones that wrapped around the mind.” It is just so well-written, and the story is great, too. It does help to google a family tree for this book to keep track of the people, at least for me.
