Über diesen Titel
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ∙ A shimmering, joyful novel about a pair of opposites with the wrong thing in common, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry.
A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2024
Named a Must-Read Book of 2024 by TIME ∙ NPR ∙ ELLE ∙ Parade ∙ Woman’s World and more!
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra.
Which is how Daphne begins her new story: Stranded in beautiful Waning Bay, Michigan, without friends or family but with a dream job as a children’s librarian (that barely pays the bills), and proposing to be roommates with the only person who could possibly understand her predicament: Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak.
Scruffy and chaotic—with a penchant for taking solace in the sounds of heart break love ballads—Miles is exactly the opposite of practical, buttoned up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection. The roommates mainly avoid one another, until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan. If said plan also involves posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together, well, who could blame them?
But it’s all just for show, of course, because there’s no way Daphne would actually start her new chapter by falling in love with her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex . . . right?

“This book pulls out all of Henry’s signature stops: sparkling banter, thoughtfully rendered family trauma and a charming community of side characters."—The New York Times
“Emily Henry has made a name for herself as among the hottest romance writers in the game right now.”—People
“Funny Story is Henry’s latest romance—and her steamiest one so far. It’s a mixture of will-they-won’t-they in a way that makes you really want them to. They’re the protagonists in separate love stories who are brought together by heartbreak. Daphne and Miles are characters you can empathize with and root for.”—Associated Press

Funny Story had everything I hoped for and more: it gave me that cozy feeling, it was funny in a laughing out loud kind of way, and was so heartwarming I sometimes squealed with happiness.
The most important thing for me in any book is that it doesn’t frame toxic masculinity or unhealthy relationship dynamics as desirable (I know, the bar is on the floor), which this book doesn’t (yay! :D).
The book is about starting over, creating a life you actually like, and appreciating the wonderful things you already have. It also is about dealing with childhood trauma (C-PTSD - complex post traumatic stress disorder) and educates the listener about narcissism, which is so valuable and important.
The build-up to the two main characters getting together was beautifully done, and the s*x scenes (not sure if I’m allowed to spell that out) were tasteful and incredibly well written.
I absolutely loved the narration (I’ll definitely be listening to more from Julia Whelan) and the story. The premise sounded interesting enough for me to start listening, but the execution absolutely exerted my expectations. I’ve heard so many great things about Emily Henry, and I can’t believe it took me this long to finally pick up one of her books. I only started this year to read and listen more to romance novels and have already found some great books. However, this one is on a whole other level. It’s definitely one of my new favorites and one of this year’s reading highlights, right next to Fourth Wing and Once Upon a Broken Heart.
I highly, hiiiiiighlyyyy recommend this book!
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to listen to every single one of Emily Henry’s books!
Just wow! My most unexpected reading highlight of 2024
