I never anticipated Charlie Florek.
Good things happen at the lake. That’s what Alice’s grandmother says, and it’s true. Alice spent just one summer there at a cottage with Nan when she was seventeen—it’s where she took that photo, the one of three grinning teenagers in a yellow speedboat, the image that changed her life.
Now Alice lives behind a lens. As a photographer, she’s most comfortable on the sidelines, letting other people shine. Lately though, she’s been itching for something more, and when Nan falls and breaks her hip, Alice comes up with a plan for them both: another summer in that magical place, Barry’s Bay. But as soon as they settle in, their peace is disrupted by the roar of a familiar yellow boat, and the man driving it.
Charlie Florek was nineteen when Alice took his photo from afar. Now he’s all grown up—a shameless flirt, who manages to make Nan laugh and Alice long to be seventeen again, when life was simpler, when taking pictures was just for fun. Sun-slanted days and warm nights out on the lake with Charlie are a balm for Alice’s soul, but when she looks up and sees his piercing green gaze directly on her, she begins to worry for her heart.
Because Alice sees people—that’s why she is so good at what she does—but she’s never met someone who looks and sees her right back.

Truth is, though, I love this author. I cannot tell you what it is, the stories are rather predictable, the characters are likable but all so un-like me or anyone I’ve ever seen….and yet I can’t stop reading…like…ever.
Nothing exceptional but I really like it :)

I’m such a big fan of Carly Fortune, so I was really excited to read A Golden Summer. Her writing just has this way of pulling you right into the scene — you feel like you’re actually there, by the lake, soaking up the summer. She describes Canadian nature so beautifully, especially the lakes and that feeling of going back to Barry’s Bay every summer. It’s cozy and nostalgic, and I love that.
After her first book, it felt really special to come back to these characters. It was great to see Percy and Sam again, and this time we got more of Charlie’s story too — the so-called “bad brother.” I loved that. You really get to see that no one is all good or all bad. Charlie getting his happy ending made the story even more touching.
What I liked most is how the book captures that feeling of teenage nostalgia — the awkwardness, the memories, and how we carry all of that into who we are now. It’s about growth and becoming a better version of yourself, while also recognizing you’re still, in many ways, the same person you were back then. It’s a gentle reminder that we can work on ourselves and move past the things that once held us back, like shyness or insecurity.
Overall, it’s just a really lovely, easy read — perfect for summer, by the pool or the beach. Carly’s writing isn’t overly complicated, but there’s something so warm and real about it. She has this special way of making simple stories feel meaningful. And of course, I have to mention the covers — they’re always so beautiful and dreamy.
Back to the scene of Barry’s Bay
